Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Well-worth it acquired taste.......2004-03-14

I bought this record on a recommendation from several people. I had heard of Turner before, of course, being a young tenor player in New York, but was preoccupied with listening to others at the time. I gave this record a shot, and at first, didn't see what all the hype was-until I started to check out Tristano. I began to realize where Turner was coming from, and after a few listenings, I became infatuated with his approach and especially his sound. He produces a totally artistic, understated, covered sound with an edge that is 100% addictive. It just takes a while to let it sink in. THe contributions of Mehldau, Brian Blade, and Larry Grenadier especially stand out, and make this reviewer sad that the band didn't stay together longer, because there is a definite chemistry happening here. The same language is being spoken. There's something to be said for music that is not immediately gratifying, because in the long run, it ususally ends up giving you more anyways. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A great album, a must for any Jazz lover........1999-07-13

Mark is a very unique and inspiring tenor player whom has impacted my playing for some time. He is without a doubt one of my favorite young tenor players to date. I look forward to hearing him for a long time. He is truly contributing to the tradition of improvised tenor sax music. Check out all his albums but most of all hear him live.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZ CLASSIC!.......1999-05-28

Mark Turner is a welcomed addition to great tenor jazz players. His music is challenging yet easy to listen to. I love every track on this C.D. and I am looking forward to upcoming releases by Mark. Truly a wonderful recording if you are a jazz/music lover.Give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Sax Heaven.......1999-04-11

Mark Turner has improvisational skills that bely his years. Of the young tenors, only James Carter is as promising. But Turner plays without the honks and squawks that Carter is known for. This may be the year's best album by a Jazz sax player.
