Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best of Bix.......2006-11-23

Bix Beiderbecke shone brightly but burnt our fast. He died young and much of his recorded legacy is spoilt by ponderous dance band arrangements, bad material (often with horrendous vocals), and the inconsistency in playing that increasingly resulted from Bix's hard living. As well, his first sides when he was in cracking form are marred by atrocious recording quality that no technology can rectify. This is my only complaint about this compilation: there are too many of these discs at the expense of the later, much better recorded sides with Frankie Trumbauer. It's a shame to miss even one good recording of Bix at his best. His crystalline, rounded tone and subtly constructed solos leap out of the sometimes prosaic settings he was recorded in. Even when he mainly plays a rhythm lead his presence is unmistakeable. With that reservation, this is probably the best single disc compilation of Bix available.

5 out of 5 stars i never tire of hearing it.......2006-02-21

in this cd i can get almost all the bands in which bix played in,and every melody is music to my hears

5 out of 5 stars A true genius.......2004-05-06

I grew up in the same town as Bix, and there is a jazz festival there (Davenport, IA) in his honor. Bix was so revolutionary in his approach, and the only musician with which he can be compared is Satchmo. Louis was an avid Bix fan himself (Ain't nobody sound like him yet). If you want to hear a true genius and jazz revolutionary, get as many of Bix's cds as possible. To paraphrase Hoagy Carmichael, the sound of his cornet is like making love to a woman. Amen!

5 out of 5 stars At the Jazz Band Ball~Bix Beiderbecke.......2003-07-19

I had heard about Bix's legendary tone and musicianship, so I decided to check it out for myself. It's all true. Bix plays beautifully. Nice re-mastering job; nice selection of tunes from beginning to end.

The music is happy, happy music. It puts a smile on my face. The fellas in the band sound as if they were having a great time with it. It's hard to imagine that this was the devil's music of its time. There's no soul-searching or deeper meaning to it, other than fun.

Originally, I bought the CD as an exploration into another era, a trip through the time tunnel. Now I can tell that I will be playing it often purely out of pleasure. Nice to meet you, Bix.
