5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2006-03-26

This is without question a desert-island disc for me. Not just one of Dexter's best, but one of the best jazz albums, period. Dexter is a bottomless resevoir of ideas, all seamlessly, brilliantly strung together in that languid, big-sound style of his. He seems so relaxed but this disc swings HARD. Please give recognition to drummer Billy Higgins, whose understated and tasteful style is a big factor in this disc's swing quotient. He always plays the right thing at the right time and scupulously complements the rest of the band. His versatily was amazing too--just think, he also played with Ornette Coleman!

And the ballads, they're lush and poignant. There isn't a soul out there, diehard jazz fan or jazz neophyte, who won't like this disc. It's virtuosic and inviting, sensuous and intelligent, addictive, joyous, and hard-swinging. You can't go wrong with it.

5 out of 5 stars Long Tall Dexter's on the Go.........2005-12-08

The masterpiece in bebop jazz history which can easily match Sonny Rollin's "Saxophone Collossus". Amongst all of Dexter's works this is my personal favourite mainly because there is a distinct feeling of melancholy and a slight detached hint of reverberation heard particularly on the ballads "Where Are You?" and " Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry". Dexter pours his heart and soul out on these ballads and weaves a solo so heartwrenching that it's effect is sublime.
I was very fortunate to see Dexter Gordon perform live in London (Ronnie Scotts Club,1977) ..at that time i was young and didn't really appreciate the magnitude of his BIG sound, style and influence. Very tall, handsome & elegantly debonair to the last note was Dexter. It appeared to me that guys like him would go on forever. He was one of the last of the innovators to survive into the early 1990s.
What an astounding performer! This CD sums his talent up in a nutshell.
Thankfully we still have Sonny Rollins left from that era.

2 out of 5 stars Dexter Gordon's Best! Needs Remastering Though..........2005-11-06

No disputing that this is an excellent jazz album and is one of my personal favourites as well as an essential one to have in any music collector's library. It needs a remastering though and so I'd recommend you go right ahead and get the remastered version. I just managed to get a remastered version in mini-lp sleeve packaging which is simply brilliant! The sound quality is like night and day when I played them both back to back. As the lp sleeve version is very rare and I believe only a few are left on the Tower website where I got mine, I guess that means you'll have to get the jewel case version but that's still a lot better than this version. Every track here though is a jazz standard; Dexter's sense of humour is what truly endears me to his playing as you'll hear him intersperse samples of other jazz standards (Panacea, Tisket a-Tasket, Take Me Out to the Ballgame among others) throughout the album. A man in total control of his instrument and a vital influence on future sax greats like John Coltrane who readily cited him as a major influence. A must have for any jazz lover's music library.

5 out of 5 stars Dexter Gordon in total command.......2003-01-31

This CD demonstrates the powerful range of this musician. The ballad numbers are just stunning in the relaxed yet incredibly strong tone of his tenor. The version of Love For Sale is one of the best I've heard ( I personally love how Miles Davis recorded this) . The rest of the quartet assembled here play extremely well on every track. Dexter Gordon can move from soaring improvisiation to quoting a familiar theme and back in a few bars without ever sounding "corny". His blowing on Three O'Clock In The Morning is a great example of this. Just when you think he's going into familiar territroy he switches gears and takes off in another direction. I mean he quotes "take me out to the ballgame" on one chorus and just as soon as you hear it he's gone somewhere else. Some may think this is corny but I find it injects some humor into his playing. Only a musician confident in his style and command could pull it off. This is a great addition to any jazz collection.
