"Township" Free Jazz!.......2006-04-08

This is a South African take on "free jazz". Its kinda intense in places but it still retains a very basic "township jazz" feel overall. But anything with Dudu Pukwana is worth the price of admission!

Free Jazz that's actually fun to listen to!.......2005-09-13

I have been looking for this album on CD for several years after hearing a couple of cuts on vinyl at a friend's house. This potent combination of top-notch musicians from Africa, Europe and South America absolutely JUMPS. With Tchicai and Pukwana soloing simultaneously on most cuts, bassist Dyani's swinging Afro-Jazz basslines keep the music from going completely "out."

This album is a great introduction to "free" music for those with more traditional tastes. The alternate takes of songs makes it clear how much of the album is written/arranged and how much is just hitting record and saying "GO." One of my favorite albums of all time.
