4 out of 5 stars Jazz That Will Expand Your Musical Horizons.......2005-11-27

I first became familiar with "Bird and Bela in B-flat" when the Blue Devils drum and bugle corps performed it in the mid 1990s. Ever since then I wanted to hear the piece in its entirety so I was excited to find this CD. I love it but, for those unfamilliar with jazz from the late 50s and early 60s, it may be too avant garde (for lack of a better phrase). I encourage you to be adventurous, though, and try this CD. The playing is excellent by all involved. The recording is well balanced. The liner notes explain the pieces very well (they were written by Don Sebesky). A good CD to expand your musical horizons (or drive mom and dad, the neighbors and/or other drivers nuts).

5 out of 5 stars Great Fusion.......2003-07-10

I bought this album on vinyl. Had to get it on CD. It is some of the most sophisticated music I have heard. It fuses classical music directly with modern jazz, using the music of baroque giant J.S Bach, and two brilliant 20th century composers, Hungarian Bela Bartok and Russian American Igor Stravinsky.
Don Sebesky is certainly one of the most outstanding composers of this esoteric music. Definitely meant for the serious, knowledgeable listener who knows and cares, and with rewarding results.

4 out of 5 stars Correction to Leoo's review.......2002-09-22

This was not recorded direct to disc. It was recorded with a tape recorder. It was half speed mastered as an LP by Mobile Fidelity in the '80s, however, which may account for the confusion. It does sound very good, and for those who like well recorded adventurous music, may fit the bill quite nicely.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Jazz Treasure.......2001-12-05

Don Sebesky is one of the best arranger and I think this CD is one of his best works. I love all 4 tracks. The arrangement is very tight and the preparation and transition from classical to Jazz is seamless and perfect...........I have yet to find something as good as this....

This CD is more for people who understands Jazz, definitely not for an average listener.
