Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Brother Is By No Means 'Shorter'.......2006-05-12

Man oh man, you gotta love clueless used music shops. I picked this album up faster than Bush's current poll numbers are dropping. It set me back $7.99 + tax. Meanwhile, in the knowledgeable music world, this cd is being sold used for $24.

What we got here is Alan Shorter working in a free-jazz trio setting - notably w/ famed Ornette Coleman bassist (on 3 tracks at least), and a personal favorite, Charlie Haden.

Shorter lays down some flugglehorn blows that will make the turkey you had for last year's Thanksgiving dinner gobble from the depths of the sewer.

5 stars. Another flawless and original by a jazz half-forgot.

5 out of 5 stars Restrained Free Jazz.......2002-09-11

This album which is quickly vanishing from the radar screen again is by Wayne Shorters older brother who plays mostly flugelhorn on it(he changed to it from sax to get out from his shadow I think). What we have here is a album that though it does echo some of the greats in free jazz still seemingly holds tight to a straight blowing session.
Alan Shorter reveals his own skill as a songwriter that even his brother had come to admire (he covered one of his songs on the great album"All Seeing Eye")Its a shame this album and the bands leader was never taken seriously (because of the title???) But it still is a terrific album with a few suprises. It also has terrific liner notes about the brothers past in Newark NJ. A great find at any used price.

4 out of 5 stars the other shorter.......2000-04-26

This cd by Wayne Shorters brother, released in a limited edition of about 7500 is a rare find indeed. Echoes of Ornette Coleman abound throughout but the album despite these comparsions is strikingly original. As a whole the music is somewhat dark and perhaps a bit sinister but not overwhelming so. Some of the improvising is within standard song structure and this is where Ornette comparsions end. I strongly recommend this cd to all free jazz fans as this is a long out of print album by a drastically underrated trumpeter.
