One of the best guitar albums ever.......2004-02-25

Absolutely an excellent album through and through. Very meditative and intense yet moving. A casual listen and the music might seem demanding at times..there are some tense moments. Still, he can sweep away the crashing phrasiology and leave listeners gasping at the beautiful guitar work. There's even a little bit of classical blended into the flamenco-esque piece "La cathedral" (#10) Can't say enough good things about this album. A must have for serious music lovers or guitar enthusiasts...a VERY IMPRESSIVE album indeed, and at the risk of sounding blasphemous, more listenable than some of his electric jazz fusion recordings.

i love the songs, and his approach, which, as always is masterfull...

Bandoneon is an aquired taste.......2002-10-17

To my ear, this is horrible. It is the worst thing that DiMeola has ever done. This album is basically a duet between DiMeola on accoustic guitar and a brazilian musician on something called a bandoneon. There are some background musicians on drums and classical guitar. The CD is just over an hour long. It includes a 12 minute cover of Chick Corea's No Mystery (from the Light As A Feather album).

The album is dominated by the sound of the bandoneon. I find the sound to be very annoying. It sounds like a cross between an accordian and a harmonica played backwards....like when we were kids and put the harmonica backwards in our mouth and suck instead of blow. It has the same sort of sound as the chromatic harmonica on Sting's 10 Summoner's Tales.

But, the first two tracks on this CD are excellent. That is because the bandoneon doesn't come on until the third track.

Apparently, I am not the only one who doesn't appreciate the bandoneon. You can always find a copy of this CD in the used bins. But, there are others who must really enjoy the sound. Just be warned, this is not a typical DiMeola album or what I would could consider an album of typical world jazz.

A unique ensemble of talent, perfection, and passion........2000-10-26

"World Sinfonia", is the first album from Dimeola's acoustic fusion ensemble of different rhythms that combine Latin, African, Tango with Middle Eastern scales and jazz harmonies. The project initiates a new phase in Dimeola's versatile and rich musical career. World Sinfonia is a major departure from the "Al Dimeola Project" and from any solo, duet, or trio efforts he has done in the past. DiMeola teams up with Dino Saluzzi (bandoneon), Arto Tuncboyaci (percussion & voice), Gumbi Ortiz (congas & percussion), and Chris Carrington (classical guitar). The project begins the tribute to Astor Piazzola, the Argentine tango revolutionary and bandoneon master, that will continue in the next two "World Sinfonia" CDs ("Heart of the Immigrants" and "The Grande Passion"). At this time, the Piazzola homage consists of only 3 themes. The first a composition from Dimeola called "Last Tango For Astor", and the other two are covers from Piazzola's main repertoire: "Tango Suite part II" and Tango Suite part III". These two themes are spectacular and the arrangements are very close to Piazzola's ambience and rhythm. As for Dimeola's composition, I have no doubt that Piazzola would have enjoyed very much playing it with Dimeola if he were alive. Other highlights of the album are "Perpetual Change", composed by Dimeola and Lustrine composed by Dino Saluzzi. Both are emotional and moving and a guitar class of technique and scale playing to all modern players. The album also includes a remake of "No Mystery", that is the title of a "Return To Forever" album that won a Grammy back in 1975. The theme has a modern tango ("milonga") flavour on the surface as a result of the use of the bandoneon, but the rhythm and harmonies are free and jazzy because of the percussion used and the chosen guitar scales and style playing. The theme changes into a rhythm of Latin, African, Eastern and Spanish influences. Somehow, this composition summarises a great part of the mood and the ambience of this project. The last two tracks (a Dimeola/Agustin Barrios) offer a calm and melodic finale that initially moves closer to classic guitar playing but with a great melancholic expression a result of the use of the bandoneon. However, the ambience is never sad, because Dimeola lifts up the rhythm and spirit as he moves quickly in and out of the scales with great joy. World Sinfonia is a unique musical experience offered by musicians that continually grow with every project they pursue. I sincerely hope that you decide to share this new music proposal.

His best acoustic work........2000-04-27

In my opinion, this is slightly better than Heart of the Immigrants. The end of the CD is incredible, from the stunning No Mystery to his amazing guitar work on Lustrine and then an intense finish with La Cathedral.
