Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I wish I had read the first review of this CD!.......2005-03-13

As a trombone player, I have long been a fan of Frank Rosolino. Unfortunately, I didn't research this CD, which features Frank's singing, with little of his trombone playing. When I buy a Frank Rosolino CD, I want to hear top-flight trombone solos, not mediocre, badly dated vocals.

5 out of 5 stars Honest Review of my Uncle.......2003-06-16

I remember the very first time I heard this lp. Remember an lp? Most of the Rosolino family, (not including Frank) was over Frank's parents house in Detroit tearing open the mail which included his new recording. Seeing the cover and Frank's wild and crazy face gave us an immediate indication of what kind of music we were about to hear.
As always, his t-bone playing was impecable. His singing showed that although he didn't have the greatest voice, buying the lp was well worth the price just to hear possibly the only known recording of Frank scat singing. I have no reservation in saying that very, very few vocalists past and or present have the talent to scat as well as Frank could. How I and others who knew Frank wished he had recorded more of his scat talent.
This CD reminds me of seeing Frank in a live concert. He floored you one moment with his amazing trombone technique and sound. The next moment you were wiping the tears from your eyes because of the jokes Frank was telling or simply making up.
I'm so excited that his recording was finally put on CD format!

5 out of 5 stars The monstruos talent of Frank Rosolino.......2003-03-10

First of all I have to say that I really love Frank Rosolino, his way, his approach to Jazz, which is a funny one, a hilarious one. I hate players who take theirself too seriously. Why? Music is and should be fun, like in those Golden west coast days!!! But that's only my opinion, of course. Frank always played for his fun, and for yours and you can hear that in his music. This is an historic album. With this one Frank tried to get more audience not only in the jazz community. Here he sings and obviously he plays trombone. The fact is that he sings and plays with extraordinary ability. Yes he is always comic, funny, romantic, he plays with notes, with his voice, with the lyrics and with trombone. Always with humour and intelligence. But this is also a bebop album. Solos infact are always straight ahead be bop solos. This one for me is a 10 stars album. For another reason. At the piano sits Victor Feldman, the jazz pianist that I love the most, probably matched only by André Previn and Phineas Newborn. In the end only two things left me a little disappointed. The first is that the album, unfortunatly is too short, and moreover comes the fact that I think this is the only one where you can hear Frank sing (I suppose). Why record companies never gave him the chance to record more in this way? The second is that I'd like to hear more scat like he did here on pennies from heaven. I repeat. Frank, a monstruos talent for true connossoirs. People who makes us laugh and have fun should never die. Thanxs Frank. I'll never forget you.

5 out of 5 stars Real jazz and swinging fun.......2002-09-18

Frank Rosolino as a jazz musician could play pots and pans, a toothless harmonica or chopsticks and could still come out with jazz. In this ONE album Mr Rosolino felt like singing, backed by such greats as Vic Feldman on piano, having some fun and goofing it up vocally. Mr Rosolino never missed a chance to put some fun in his extremely complicated, unrepeatable jazz solos - and he's got some real goodies on this album, using a mute most of the time - which is OK. I guess I'm lucky because I've had a chance to hear that trombone jazz genius live at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach. He was a real vehicle, making other guys sound great, really giving the customers their money's worth.
This album, as many others of this type, is a must for real jazzmen and I know that there are many of you out there.

1 out of 5 stars don't be fooled.......2002-09-15

I made the mistake of buying this CD without listening to the samples. This is essentially a vocal CD. I am in awe of Franks trombone playing, but not his vocals
