Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music for Large and Small Ensembles.......2006-03-22

A stunning album. Beautiful arrangements, instrumentation and compositions.

5 out of 5 stars A landmark recording in the modern big band style.......2001-12-29

Kenny Wheeler's approach to the big band is everything you would hope: powerful, introspective, and innovative. His use of female vocals alongside the brass is incredibly unique. His orchestration is beautiful, and the compositions are fantastic. A must for anyone interested in modern jazz, and certainly modern big band.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2001-12-28

Kenny Wheeler's approach to large jazz ensemble writing is one of the most innovative and unique. Fantastic compositions, gorgeous orchestration, brilliantly played.

5 out of 5 stars The genius of Kenny Wheeler.......2000-09-15

This album was recorded at the same time as the quintet masterpiece "The Widow In The Window" and it shows off Kenny Wheeler's talent to the full: especially with a large band at hand his definately original concept of tonality becomes completely clear. What impresses so much about his music is its inherent emotional quality. Accompanied by mostly English reeds and brass and the flowing bass of Dave Holland, the tasteful guitar of John Abercrombie, the perfect piano playing of John Taylor and not to forget the INCREDIBLE drumming of Peter Erskine, the music comes out in all its beauty. My favorite amongst all this beauty is "Sophie": a beautiful intro with just horns is followed after two minutes by just piano to set the motive of the song, after which the whole band joins in, with Peter Erskine moving the music forward in an unbelievable way (his cymbal work and setting of accents is just flawless and so supportive of the music!) and of course Kenny Wheeler's immediately recognizable sound in the solo part. Please make sure that you buy "The Widow In The Window" as well, as it will enrich your life. And while you are at it, check out "Deer Wan", "Gnu High", "All The More" and "Angel Song", too.
