Customer Reviews:
Mixed Bag.......2002-02-24
This CD combines two otherwise un-related sessions, Sweet Slumber and Wildflower. Sweet Slumber is a first rate, 5-star record, which opens with a quintessential Person-ified slow blues, Late Night Lullabye. The piano on this set, Charles Brown, also sings on about half the tunes. At first I was distracted by his very personal vocal style, which I had not heard before. But on a second exposure it's very nice. He doesn't sing on every cut, but when he does it adds quite a lot to the whole thing. It ain't Sinatra, it ain't supposed to be, get over it!
The Wildflower session is marred by two things: the first cut, Preachin and Teachin, just doesn't fit in to the soulful jazz sound that Person typically delivers. And the sax is recorded with a huge amount of reverb making it sound like some kind of weird mixing experiment.
Fortunately, the rest of Wildflower isn't as bad as the first cut, and there is in fact some real solid swing... It's just this first cut that is like a scar on an otherwise good set.
Houston Person new CD merges the soul of blues and jazz........1998-10-15
I have waited a long time for Houston Person's "Wildflower" to be released on CD. The grooves of my LP are well-worn from years of play. In the new release on JAZZ 32 records, "Lost and Found," Houston Person's original recordings from "Wildflower" are featured along with a group of never-before-released recordings with blues legend Charles Brown. The Brown sessions and the "Wildflower" sessions each have their own spirit, but they complement one another well. The "Wildflower" session features the much overlooked organist Sonny Phillips. With the return of interest in the Hammond B-3, Phillips' contributions may yet receive due recognition. I know of no recording that more clearly emphasizes the sensitivity and soulfulness of Phillips' playing. I dig his grooves and his lush ballad chordings. Person's honking, growling, and whispering tenor add counterpoint and poignant punch to the mix. This is a CD that captures some of the best jazz playing of the 1970s, playing that is fresh and doesn't rely on gimmicks. The Brown sessions feature Brown on piano, and create a down-home mood. These recordings are more recent than the "Wildflower" sessions and provide an opportunity to assess Person's maturation on the saxophone, and the shades of stylings that he has added in the two decades between the recordings. This CD is a great deal, and is aptly retitled as "Lost and Found." This find is a buried treasure.
