Music that stirred up the music world.......2005-11-11
What a great tribute to a great band!!! These performances recorded live on the east coast are a fresh new look at the tunes not played by many these days.
The band fronted by drummer Greg Bendian had these performances approved by McLaughlin himself with his blessings. The tunes are powerful and very clean and tight. In many ways with today's recording techniques and instruments the sound is far superior than the original records from the 70's.
The only disappointment is that "You Know, You Know" and "Lotus on Irish Streams" where not done acoustically. I know that this band has done acoustic sets on their dates.
This is a "don't miss" CD!!! Also check out the new "Visions of an Inner Mounting Apocalypse" tribute on Tone Center.
Anyone attempting to emulate this amazing material is worthy.......2005-02-25
of praise. And these guys do a fantastic job at it as well as bring a new perspective. I only wish John McLaughlin and the original Orchestra didn't have the fallout that they did. No member of the original lineup was ever any where close to as vividly creative and intense as they were in the early 70s. Though McLaughlin is a genius he was never better than when surrounded by the fantastic musicians of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. (However I must say Visions of the Emerald is astounding and I would love to hear the mahavishnu project tackles some of those tunes.) Great job you guys keep it up, I'm sure all of the Mahavishnu Orchestra is honored by your work. Also John's playing and Jerry's riff on "I Wonder" off the "Lost Trident Sessions" is one of my favorite tunes of all time and would love to hear a fresh interpretation. Footnote if you like ths stuff: Check out a couple of obscure players that put out an album of amazing flamenco fusion virtuosity in the mid 90s called Sunyata: Gypsy Sun Gypsy Moon.
A great driving CD........2005-01-01
I can imagine the original Mahavishnu Orchestra playing this stuff. The band takes the original compositions and takes them out by adding its own arrangements and impressive improvisational forays. I don't see what is wrong with interpreting awesome compositions from the past and making them your own. I have been lucky enough to see this band live. It kicks! This CD has been in my car CD for a few months now. I don't think I will be taking it out any time soon.
What is the point? .......2004-11-30
What is the point? This has all been done already - and far better.
Even if drummer Gregg Bendian could come close to Billy Cobham's incredible genius (one the greatest artists ever on the drums), the rest of the band falls far short. There is no valid artistic reason to copy art. The Mahavishnu masterpieces should be left alone.
The only good thing I can say about this project is that it increases the chances that the younger crowd can find and appreciate the original recordings.
