5 out of 5 stars A playful piano Smorgasbord.......2003-01-03

Making my listmania list for my favorite cds of 2002, I saw that this disc that I have been enjoying for the greater part of the year is finally available here.

Without stepping in the quick sands of crossover and fusion, Joanna MacGregor decided to start her own label to allow for more artistic freedom. This eclectic cd is a direct result of this vision. The works on this cd span approximately 4 centuries ranging from Gibbons to Ligetti, from Bach to Piazzola, from Dowland to Nancarrow, from Ives to MacGregor.

With such a diverse repertoire there are always strengths and weaknesses. Superb are the Ives, the Nancarrow, the Dowland and Alistair Nicolson's 42nd St Stomp. The Cage, Bach, Gibbons and Somei Satoh's Incarnation II are good to great. Some of the other things were not really my cup of tea, but nevertheless of high quality. The only qualms I have are with the Piazzola piece where the inclusion of a tape of a speech by the composer played in the tango, which some may recognize as a former Grace Jones' hit, started annoying the hell out of me upon repeated hearing.

The album contains both live and studio recordings and the overall quality, while not matching Joanna's own recording of Birtwistle Harrison's clocks, is more than adequate.

Recommended to the more adventurous listeners.
