A Good Concept.......2007-02-24

In the time that this was released, Herbie had struck jazz gold in the release of this landmark album. He took Miles' far out funk stew, dumbed it down, threw in some catchy hooks, and took some great solos to create this 70's masterpiece.

This laid the groundwork for jazz, funk, smooth jazz, jazz pop, and even some rock records to come decades later.

Some of it regresses into Miles' endless riffing Fusion stylings, but when this group finds the pocket, it is DEEP.

A great record and worth the buy.

It was all about Sly Stone.

Herbie Hancock - in a December 1996 essay included in the liner notes to Head Hunters - writes, "I started thinking about Sly Stone and how much I loved his music and how funky 'Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself' is. I was hearing that song over and over again."

From that inspiration from one artist to another came this jazz-funk classic. Clean production, ample room for Bennie Maupin (reeds), Harvey Mason (drums) and Bill Summers (percussion) to stretch their solos, with bassist Paul Jackson pushing the rhythm and Hancock pulling down unique electronic sounds in the Fall 1973 recording sessions that produced this extraordinary album.

Hancock is nothing less than superb on the classic Chameleon and Sly, the band's tribute to Sly Stone. The studio tricks on Chameleon are a special treat. Vein Melter covers a more jazzy terrain, while Watermelon Man produces some hot work from Mason and Summers.

The 1970s brought a revolution of musical vision, with Head Hunters near the top of the pack in busting down the finite walls of sound and delivering infinite possibilities through a new generation of musicians who had jazz in their hearts and funk running through their veins.

A lot of people seem to be complaining that this is a tired non-jazz, non-funk album. Maybe they are right. Maybe it's not straight forward jazz or funk. That doesn't mean it's not good music though. Maybe Herbie took out the jazz and took out the funk and made something completely new. There are certainly elements of jazz and funk throughout the album. Jazz is a broad category. This album fits because of the elements it contains. It contains nothing less than wonderful improvisation. The sax solo on Sly is one the best pieces of instrumentation I have ever heard. That's a big piece of jazz. I know it's also a big piece of rock music as well, but not the same way it's used here. I'll be honest, Sly and the Family Stone and Parliament are great funk musicians, but I'd take Headhunters over them any day. The music is deeper, more complex, and always offers up something new.

I HAVE HAD IT SINCE IT CAME OUT IN 1973, AND ITS' STILL AS GOOD TODAY AS IT WAS BACK THEN. WOW THERE ARE CERTAINLY ARE A LOT OF REVIEWS WRITTEN ABOUT THIS RECORD.IT IS HARD TO DESCRIBE THIS ALBUM, IT'S NOT QUITE JAZZ, IT'S NOT QUITE "FUNK", IT'S NOT QUITE "FUSION" MUSIC, IT STANDS ON ITS' OWN AS SOMETHING ELSE. KIND OF A COMBINATION OF ALL THREE. AT THE TIME, KEYBOARD INNOVATIONS WERE REALLY COMING INTO VOGUE AND HERBIE REALLY KNEW HOW TO EXPLOIT IT ON THIS ALBUM. BETTER THAN HIS LATER ELECTRONIC STUFF, WHICH WAS A LOT MORE COMMERCIAL. OTHER CONTEMPORARIES FROM THIS TIME INCLUDE CHICK COREA, JAN HAMMER, GEORGE DUKE, AND TO A CERTAIN EXTENT, STEVIE WONDER.

A true classic.......2006-09-29

I have always loved this album. I finally got it on CD after several vinyl copies. One of the most original musical works ever made. There are traces of Funk, Soul, Jazz, Blues, Electronica and more. One could say this album layed the groundwork for so much Electronic music in the past four decades. The heart of this album is the fact that all the musicians can really play with a lot of passion and fire. "Chameleon " is my favorite song on this album, a super funk masterpiece. In it's time a lot of people dismissed it as a passing phase, but thirty something years later it is still a vital and important album in American music. I am sure this album will have a very long life span. I would imagine a huge amount of musicians from several eras were influenced by this album. On some albums the influence is extremly obvious. I find it amazing how fresh the music on this CD sounds after all these years. The production has such a clean and modern sound, especially considering the fact that when Head Hunters was recorded, technology was pretty primative. Simply a great album. If you like this kind of music, it is a must have.
