Sandborn more or less in fine form.......2006-02-07

David Sanborn give`s you "nightlife music", that`s for sure.
The music all through this CD is sometimes funky, sometimes very melancholic, and if you mix this musical
ingridient`s together it can create`s "minor masterpieces".
On this one there some glimmering inbetween the different tracks. Track 1 Relativity has a steady rythmic beat, with a Sandborn saxophone "funky" and "talkative" in a way. A good beginning. Track 2 D.S.P is more melancholic, with a crackling beginning, which sound`s like a vinyl record, at it`s start. It`s slowmoving and has a certain quality, helped by Sandborn saxophone once again. Track 3 Rikke, bring`s you in a romantic mood, with very effective use of somekind
of muffeld syntheseisers, and once again Sandborn saxopohne talk to your`e soul. 4. Listen here. Well, this is a letdown in a way, but the funny thing is that this song talk to you in a way, and say`s :Listen here, with just the help of the different instruments. Track 5 Spooky. It has a very effective rythmic beat, that make`s youre feet move to the beat.
Track 6 Missing you, cries out in a way, and you can feel the mood Sandborne is in when he play`s this one. Track 7 Rumpelstiltskin, is a funky melody, with a very rythmic beat that would "jazz" you up in a way. Track 8 Infant Eyes, is to slooooow, and is nice to sleep in to, but as a musical wakeup call, it`s not. Track 9 Southern Exposure is a good and funky last song on the CD. All in all this is Sandborn more or less in fine form. 3 1/2 stars, nearly 4, but not right up there.

Songs from the Night Before .......2005-10-12

I was intially motivated to purchase this David Sanborn classic due to the Detroit area local jazz station regular play of Sanborn's cd "Songs from the night before" song "Rikky". That is a very relaxing,senual and sexy song piece, so I became compelled to purchase the entire cd. I was not disappointed. I have been an avid listerner to David Sanborn since his collaboration cd with Bob James '1986 cd "Double Vison". Double vision is a true classic that really open up the entire diminsion of Jazz music for me and at the time I was only 14 years old. Now my interest in Jazz has increased tremendously and I would absolutely love, love to see Sanborn in concert!!!! I beleive it would be an great experience. I truly percieve David Sanborn as a "legend".....

The day after..........2004-05-11

There was a film from the mid eighties called the day after. It described what the world looked like after a nuclear bang. Not pretty. Lots of desolation. That is how I feel about this cd.

On this occasion, Sanborn teams up with the Peterson brothers. The lads are very good friends with Ben Sidran, musician, producer and record label owner. They all share passion for blues and Jazz. You can also find Phil Upchurch on one track, and Randy Brecker on trumpet. Good ingredients right ? well the sauce just doesn't taste good...

First, Sanborn doesn't sound genuine, except for a couple of tracks (especially "Rikke" and "Missing you", curiously enough the slowest jams on the album). Then, there is a lot of "I wanna sound on the F.M." type of tracks. It just sounds cheap commercial effort from the very first track. The more bluesy tracks aren't really catchy ("Listen here" that is sooo repetitive, "DSP") and when you get to the end of the record, you ask yourself "That's it?". You see, the trick is that this cd is less than 40 minutes long... Just like in the good old days of the vinyl when you had between 17 and 23 minutes per side. There wouldn't be anything wrong with that if the tracks were of quality, but it isn't the case.

In my modest opinion, a very mediocre album, with a mediocre cover version of the too often heard "Spooky". Sanborn can do better, but this cd seems to be in the middle of a bad period from him. Little inspiration and lack of punch. As a matter of fact I saw him at a concert live with Al Jarreau, Joe Sample and Roberta Flack just two years after this cd was released and, much to my dismay, David Sanborn flew unnoticed through that concert. That too was a disappointment.

So, if you want to enjoy David Sanborn albums, go to the necessary "As we speak", "Backstreet", or "straight to the heart", or even try "Inside", from a couple of years ago.

Breast Cancer got beat with 'the man'.......2003-02-19

David Sanborn will always be a part of my life, as he helped me through not one but two bouts with breast cancer. I actually went to see him two days before I was first diagnosed, and through chemo and baldness and eventually the removal and reconstruction of my breasts, he kept me going....
Keep it up Dave!

Songs From The Night Before.......2003-02-02

THIS ONE'S A KEEPER especially if you like good old funky blues, (and I do), this album will get you movin'. It's rare to buy a CD and like all the selections but on this one I do.
Track 3 "RIKKI" is soulfully beautiful for just blissful
listening.
Track 4 This was a big hit for the late, great Eddy Harris
and if you have the guts to follow Harris's sax on
"LISTEN HERE" you just better be David Sanborn.
And then of course there's Track 5 "SPOOKY" and it just doesn't get any better than that. It's classic R&B Sanborn.
Track 6 "MISSING YOU" Once again we slow the tempo for an incredible blues. He pours his soul into this rendition and again demonstrates his amazing command of the alto sax. I can get lost in this one.

I do think my favorite is the final track "SOUTHERN EXPOSURE". It has that "get down" funky feel that Sanborn does so well and nobody else can match---guaranteed to get you up and goin'!
