Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Recording!!!!!!!!!.......2004-08-23

This album usually is a favorite among Spyro fans. There's no irony to that either. This album swings, grooves, and everything in between. The opener, City Kids samples what is to come in the album, and oh boy is it great! One thing that is different about this cd is that on every song, there is an ever changing cast of musicians. Spyro Gyra usually has this on an album while they're going through a personell change. Example, Deep End. Their new album, there are a lot of different musicians on each song, because they were going through a change in the lineup. Same here. The next set cast of musicians would include drummer Richie Morales, Tom Schuman, and Dave Samuels, would become official members and guitarist Julio Fernandez would take over the guitar spot. Back to the album. A great funky track is Conversations. Members Dave Samuels and Steve Gadd are highlights to the song. This album was recorded when Spyro Gyra was just getting on their way, and their sound hadn't changed much. Anyway, this is a great recording.

5 out of 5 stars A review of Spyro Gyra's City Kids........2003-04-27

City Kids is one of Spyro Gyra's best cd's that they have ever released. It was released back in 1983. The 80's, in my opinion, were the height of Spyro Gyra's career so far. A lot of their best and most memorable music took place in this decade, especially the early 1980's. City Kids is no exception.

All of the 8 tracks on this cd are near perfection and are played with extreme talent. Every player contributes something to a song to make it sound very good. All of the parts come toghether to make the songs sound authentic and awesome. Even though this isn't my favorite cd of their's, it ranks up in the top 5. It is the second Spyro Gyra cd that I purchased. This cd is definetly a Spyro Gyra classic.

My top 3 favorite songs on this cd would have to be tracks 1,2, and 4. City Kids has a nice jazzy urban beat to it. Serpent In Paradise has an exquisite guitar solo in it and is one of their best songs of all time, I think. Nightlife is also a terrifically played song.

All of the pieces on this cd are excellent. You should definetly buy this cd if you haven't already done so. Especially if you are looking for great, classic Spyro Gyra. You won't regret it. Thank you for taking the time and generosity to read my review.

5 out of 5 stars Spyro Gyra has another winner here........2000-12-13

They've done it again!! Spyro Gyra at this point would have to be considered the epitome of contemporary jazz--and for good reason. They have once again come out with another recording with all excellent pieces on it. This is the last Spyro Gyra CD featuring Chet Catallo on guitar.

5 out of 5 stars Spyro Gyra at their best!.......2000-09-26

If you like jazz, you'll love Spyro Gyra. If you like Spyro Gyra, you'll love City Kids. This 1983 release was one of my first jazz records, and a big reason why jazz became my favorite kind of music. Thanks to Amazon, I now have it on CD! This one ranks with their best (Morning Dance, Catching the Sun, Freetime, Incognito...). As always, Jay Beckenstein's sax is phenomenal. The keyboards, guitar, vibes & marimba are incredible. The guitar solo in Serpent really scorches. A Ballad totally carries you away. No weak tunes on this one (3 songs appear on the live-Access All Areas). Check it out.
