BURNIN'!.......2001-02-22
Bob Mcchesney is a phenom of the highest order! This CD knocked me out of my chair... and I'm a sax player! This man, and fellow West Coast trombonist Andy Martin, never cease to amaze with what they can do on that instrument! Burnin'... absolutely burnin'!
Bob McChesney, Technical Master of the Trombone.......2000-11-05
"No Laughing Matter: Plays Steve Allen" by the Bob McChesney Quartet displays one of the many facets of Allen's genius, and highlights Bob McChesney's total mastery of "doodle" tonguing on the trombone. Bob is a wonderful trombonist, and has carried its technical development to a new high, while retaining its musicality (unlike some of his contemporaries, who seem to have developed technique for its own sake). A must for all trombone fans.
Doodle tongue monster!.......2000-07-24
It was with great trepidation that I bought this CD. After all, I'm 27 years old and could not name 1 Steve Allen song off the top of my head. But I figured, what the heck. And then I listened to it- Wow. If Bob McChesney doesn't record another album, he can look back on this one and be proud of it. Some of the tunes aren't the most harmonically advanced, but the selections are all good. My favorite is 'Road Rage' the 3rd cut. What's amazing about Bob's playing is his use of the doodle tongue technique. It allows him to play much faster and cleaner than the rest of us mortals. This leads to astonishing results on the first cut, which is at 350 beats a minute! Although he doesn't put much air though the horn, and sounds like a french horn at times, what he plays is great. There's a nice selection of different styles on this album too, from ballad to latin to burning modal tunes. This is definitely one of the best trombone albums I've ever bought. Any fans of the trombone or Steve Allen music should buy this CD immediately!
relentless.......2000-07-23
McChesney is an inspired force on the trombone; he is in a class by himself technically, and he is a soulful and resourceful improvisor. His diligence and creativity make this disc a fascinating listen. Although I would have liked to have heard him stretch out more and make the rhythm section get its hands dirty, his slide work alone easily merits the 5 stars
