Customer Reviews:
A Great Bass Players' Listen.......2005-09-01
Transition has, little by little, become my favorite Dave Weckl CD. It certainly has as much drumming artistry as one would expect from Weckl. But I'm writing this because of bassist Tom Kennedy. Kennedy is stellar on this recording. He is just about all you would want a bass player to be - he's there when he needs to be, and out of the way when he needs to be. His tone is great, his basslines are molto-groovy and add much to the songs' storylines, and he blows a couple nice solos too.
If you are a bass player, pick this one up and listen to Tom Kennedy, who does a wonderful job here.
Shut up and play 'yer drum.......2004-07-25
I have some sort of sentiment to this release. This was one of my first jazz records I heard and (what's even more important) enjoyed. I still have it on a cassette, very poor quality but I still enjoy it as much as in the beginning. Yes, I admit, Dave Weckl's releases are a bit soulles, sometimes even naive but listening to them is pure fun. Of course if you like that kind of "virtuosic-show-off" music and drum-oriented jazz. Propelled by a kaleidoscopie array of Weckl rhythms - from funk, to New Orleans swamp grooves, to Afro-Latin to odd-meter polyrhythms to everything in between.
So...you must make your own choice. I know that not everybody appreciates that kind of music. However you should try. Maybe you will be positively suprised.
The best Dave Weckl Band album.......2004-03-20
This is by far in my opinion Dave Weckl's best album. I would probably say (though I may be wrong) that this album is much more improvisationally based than "Rhythm of the Soul" and "Synergy". I much prefer the 4 piece band with Steve Weingart on keyboards who I much prefer to Jay Oliver. This is also Brandon Fields best album because he has a great tone. For some reason I wasn't all that impressed with Brandon's playing on "Synergy", but now, after hearing "Transition" I really love his playing. I like his choice of notes when he improvises and everything within his playing. Steve Weingart also needs a special mention because he is groovy and techinically brilliant who has brought a new dimension to the band.I think that one reason for this being my favourite Weckl album is the introduction of Weingart who has brought a new sound to the band, in my opinion.
I would prefer it if Tom Kennedy would slap bass like some of the slap bass masters (e.g.Larry Graham, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten) because with some of the Funk/R'n'B tunes (e.g "Like That"), I think that this style of playing is required. But he is a great player with a lot of technical ability who is solid and really locks in well with Weckl.
Some songs that are highlights for me are "Wake Up", "Brazilbuba", "Like That", "Crossing Paths" and "Amanecer" where we hear a bit of Salsa at the end which I didn't expect to hear! "Passion" is a beautiful ballad that shows another side to the Band's playing. Weckl plays percussion in this song with his bare hands and a mallet to strike the cymbal.
This is an absolutely brilliant album and I don't know why people criticise this album because there is great versatility on this CD and a great sound. Weckl is among the elite of drummers and he is my favourite drummer, to keep the groove going and play the percussion at the same time is mind boggling. I firmly recommend this CD. Especially drummers who want to have some inspiration, and Weckl consistently inspires me! He's not just an incredible drummer, but now an incredible musician.
Different, but not his best work.......2004-03-16
I agree with some of what I've seen others say. He's clearly a phenom. but it gets a little annoying after a while. No need to rip the chops out CONSTANTLY.
This is good to have as part of your collection, and I did like it better than some of his earlier solo work...but this would not be the first (or even 2nd) of Weckl's releases that I would recommend.
The space of music.......2004-03-11
The space of jazz feelings is so huge, but too little without Jay Oliver's ideas and the Buzz's art of making awesome melody.
The most of DWB's musical creativity was in the soul of Jay. Who knows what was in the hearts of Buzz, Jay, Brandon, Tom and Dave after Synergy's out. Legends are empty? I HOPE NOT!!!! Check out Full Moon Second and Whirlies.
