Wonderful contrapuntal arrangements and excellent soloists.......1998-05-01

Jim McNeely has to be one of the greatest jazz composers ever. His contrapuntal arrangements, which utilise everyone in the quintet to the fullest, are breathtaking and the soloists on this record suit the material perfectly. I wish there were more records featuring his small group writing as I find the big band records a little dull and heavy. Records by Brian Lynch and Chris Potter feature similar arranging and writing. The material is probably for die hard jazz fans who dig interesting grooves and soloists weaving their way through difficult structures while still remaining soulful. This CD is easily one of the most interesting and enduring records made.
