Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Arangements and Fine Musicianship.......1999-12-30

Don Sebesky does an excellent job of bringing the artistry of seasoned artists like Bob Brookmeyer and Toots Thielemans, as well as younger stalwarts such as Hubert Laws and Eddie Daniels to the session. The arrangements run the gamut from sparse to orchestral. And while this is a tribute to a great pianist, there are no keyboards here. This leaves room for the fine rhythm work of guitarist Larry Coryell, bassist Marc Johnson, and drummer Joe LaBarbera to set the tone.

There is a lot of magic here. On Miles' "So What", we are launched into a musical tornado, and within seconds left with only guitar, bass and drums. When the melody comes, it at double tempo, giving rise to fine haunting solos by our musicians. Another heart felt piece, "Blue in Green", with lyrics by Sebesky and the voice of Jeanie Bryson is a gem.

If you're a jazz buff, this should be in your collection. If you're looking for fine composition and arrangements, with some of the best players in jazz, look no further.

5 out of 5 stars A unique concept from a unique man........1999-03-01

the arrangement of waltz for debby just won a grammy for a man who has been long overdue to win one. This cd, without a piano, but with exceptional orchestral and big band playing, rates as one of mr. sebesky's best to date, along with his work with audra mcdonald, john pizzarelli, and the stephen sondheim cd with the london symphony. this cd is a must for any lover of music in general, and bill evans in particular. songs touched upon include, the title track, so what and i remember bill, a sebesky original. Soloists on the cd range from, eddie daniels to larry coryell to toots thielmans. excellance abounds on a cd that a sure hit with any true music fan!
