Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this is the most complete volume you're going to find.......2005-12-13

I became crazy about Valaida Snow ever since I heard the jamming Minnie the Moocher on the radio. This stuff is a gold mine, unknown to even jazz/swing aficionados. She combines vocals with trumpets in a way no one has managed to do except Louis Armstrong (who called her the "2nd greatest singer/trombonist in the world"). . BTW, the liner notes (prepared by a playwright, I think, were utterly fascinating and the best I'd ever read). And it dispelled lots of myths you'll find repeated in superficial web biographies on wikipedia and elsewhere. I.E. he casts doubt on the silly notion that Snow was involved in the drug scene in Europe during the Nazi takeover.

I am floored that Valaida Snow doesn't merit a single mention in Gary Giddins Visions of Jazz or Mark Gridley's Jazz Styles textbook.

One other thing. I recall checking the other CD's online before buying this 2 CD set. There may be one or two singles on the other releases, but this CD contains almost everything there is to find.

Sonically her best stuff sounds like roy Eldridge/Lionel Hampton, with her interpretations of traditional classics just so idiosyncratic you'll be amazed. Faves: I can't dance, Minnie the Moocher (outmooches Cab Calloway), I want a lot of love, Singing in the Ring, Poor Butterfly.

5 out of 5 stars A georgious and talnted hot jazz trumpet player/vocalist..........2000-08-01

Valaida Snow plays the trumpet hot in the Armstrong tradition, she also sings(similar to Adelaide Hall, but much hotter), Snow is virtually unknown today but in Europe in the 30's she was considered a jazz legend, and a very popular one at that. This two CD set highlights both her jazzy trumpet playing, and her lovley vocal talents. An excellent introduction to a hidden gem of a jazz legend.

5 out of 5 stars A great jazz artist who brinigs alot of joy with her.......1999-06-13

A sensational collection of songs and trumpet playing by a little known jazz artist whose neglect is a disservice to all who love Jazz. Take a listen, and you're a fan.
