Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Legendary Gathering of Tenor Sax Stars.......2007-01-15

This album, now quite rare on vinyl, is a must have for saxophonists and fans of saxy jazz. John Coltrane soars, Zoot Sims swings as usual, Al Cohn lays down some tasty licks and Hank Mobley aquits himself admirably. The rhythm section is more than adequate and the tunes presented are quite enjoyable. Liner notes lead you to be able to recognize the tone of each player - it's fun to guess the solo order on the last tunes.

5 out of 5 stars RULES...IN A KNIFE FIGHT??!!.......2003-11-16

Hey Kev...if I am 'allowed' to have a "chat room" hatefest about Astrud, then you and I can have a "chatroom" bondfest about this recording. Be warned, though, you've already gotten an unhelpful taste of what supporting yours truly can bring. And this after no interest on this CD AT ALL!! Anyway, from one jazz announcer to another - I dig it, and your support. We'll hook soon...You're reading my last utterances on this site now.

5 out of 5 stars Now this really is different...I'm the FIRST..........2003-09-12

I can not believe that I am the first person to review this CD. Are you bop-ers out there asleep? Just kidding...it's just that ANYTHING with Coltrane on it usually has 15 reviews, at least, already before I get to it. Let me tell you - here is a great CD, with 4, count 'em, 4 tenor saxmen wailing and ballad-eering their way through a classic set. Wait until you hear Trane tear into the ballad "How Deep Is The Ocean". By the way - the Red Garland Trio holds down the rest of the chairs on this one. Mobley is in top form, and Sims, and Cohn provide a real 'West Coast' kind of 'play-off' for Trane and Mobley. Man, you have to get hip to this one!! Prestige, circa 1956.
