5 out of 5 stars A Genuine Treat.......2005-11-27

What a treat that ECM has (finally) released this unique and legendary 1975 recording session on compact disc. Long out of print for years, "Trance" marks the beginning of Kuhn's affiliation with ECM; and although Kuhn recorded a wide range of projects for the label, "Trance" is, perhaps, the least typical, insofar as it is a stunning mixture of acoustic and electric ensemble jazz.

Perhaps most known for his small-combo work in acoustic trios and quartets, Kuhn is also an effective electric player whose work on this recording prefigures, by several decades, the current wave of "electronica" bands like The New Deal. Three "up" tunes here, most notably "Changing Face," feature a surging groove with Steve Swallow's electric bass bubbling under Kuhn's keyboards with a playful urgency.

On the acoustic piano numbers, Kuhn leans towards his more typically-atmospheric sound, with the opening title track wafting in on a strange, hypnotic wave of sound. Two other compositions, "Silver" and "Life's Backward Glance" have received Kuhn treatments on several other recordings; here each tune evinces a hauntiing quality that is neither forced nor pretentious. Understated and poetic, his single-note piano work on these songs is a study in restraint and tone--two features commonly associated with Kuhn's work elsewhere.

But whether "Trance" is funky, introspective, moody, or celebratory, the musicians are energetic and appear genuinely enthusiastic about the material. Perhaps this is why "Trance" sounds as fresh today as it did in 1975.

Side note: Hopefully ECM will re-release Kuhn's later ensemble recording "Motility."
