Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars The Buddy Rich Verve Sessions?.......2007-03-08

If you've got the jones for a Benny Carter gig, this nice small session sound will sooth your achings. If you're wanting to hear Oscar Peterson do his thing, this ain't the album for you. Carter simply over powers every one. The saving grace is a rare Buddy Rich out of his big band element.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful set of Benny Carter..........2003-09-21

This is so sweet, this one, and it dovetails perfectly with the "3,4,5" CD. These sessions - featuring Oscar Peterson again, and his various trios and a quartet also - are of Carter playing all standards. Make no mistake, this Swing giant has assimilated Parker by the time these early '50s recordings were done; however his playing is never overpowered by that asimilation. You could not go as far as to call it even 'influence', as Carter has his own voice and it is unique, as it always had been, but he had monumental respect for his alto brother Bird, going as far as to say much later that he still felt that Bird was jazz' last major significant innovator. Carter with Peterson's Trio is magic, and well suited to one another. This is another GREAT Benny Carter CD reissue. For the record (no pun intended), the LPs these tracks come from are "Benny Carter Plays Pretty", "New Jazz Sounds", "Alto Saxes", and "Cosmopolite".
