5 out of 5 stars More Bossa Nova beyond category.......2004-11-21

Tamba 4 is Tamba Trio with one more member who entered the group just for these CTi sessions. Tamba Trio was one of the most creative and successful trios among the so-many Brazilian Bossa Nova trios. Tamba's longtime career in Brazil includes solo albums and also a big set of standard albums in collaboration with so many big Bossa Nova artists in Brazil with memorable results. Artists like Leny Andrade, Edu Lobo, Quarteto em Cy, Maysa, and Sylvia Telles.

Luiz Eca was the late genius at the piano and behind the string arrangements. Bebeto was the multi-instrumentalist on sax, bass and flute. Elcio Milito was the drummer. Both Eca and Bebeto contributed inventive vocals for the original Tamba ensemble, a distinctive mix of instrumental trio with vocals.

Legends say Creed Taylor would not have liked these Tamba 4 sessions results! However Japanese A&M staff discovered Tamba's material within the label's files and issued their 2 CTi albums for the 40th year celebration of Bossa Nova what made them big hits among those who sample Bossa Nova.

'We and The Sea' [Nos e o Mar] - the title song was a smash hit in Brazil both as an intrumental by Tamba Trio and as the famous ultimate vocal rendition of Leny Andrade, also backed by Tamba.

'Moca Flor' was another Tamba smash hit in Brazil featuring the distinctive vocal solo by Bebeto.

'Dolphin' is the beautiful Luiz Eca composition widely covered in the USA by Bill Evans (available in his Complete Verve Recordings), Stan Getz, and Jacky Terraisson among so many others. 'Iemanja' is also a beautiful composition by Luiz Eca.

Here you'll also find some Bossa Nova standards like "O Moro' and 'Consolacao', both Tamba smash hits in Brazil.

5 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best.......2004-05-12

One of the premier jazz recordings out of Brazil in the late '60s, this has been a long time arriving in CD format while other CTI recordings received quick translations.
If you've never heard this quartet, you need to. It did for Brazilian music then what Suba did for it in the past decade.

5 out of 5 stars Nice to see an old friend on CD.......2003-03-04

As a serviceman on Okinawa in the late 60's I spent what was to me a fortune on a Japanese pressing of this album. Bossa Nova has always appealed to me in part because the musicians can make powerful music that can also be shamelessly beautiful.
This album features O Morro which is a rich and unusually challenging piece of music for listeners used to music that makes them feel like they are on a beach somewhere.
Kudos to Verve for bringing it back. Highly recommended. Now how about Samba Blim?

4 out of 5 stars The Afro-Brazilian gods of the sea and storms are appeased.......2000-09-09

The Afro-Brazilian gods of the sea and storms are appeased by this musical offering. Lemanja (track 3) with its fishermen's chanted hymns is a must-hear. Bossa Nova at its best!

5 out of 5 stars The Afro-Brazillian gods of sea and storms are appeased.......2000-09-02

All I want to say is that the Afro-Brazillian gods of sea and storms are appeased by this offering. Lemanja, track 3, with it's fisherman chants sets the groove for the rest of it: samba and bossa nova. This one is a must-hear.
