Customer Reviews:
Great Sound Quality! Not so Great Track Selections!.......2005-10-21
It's really a shame that because of legal wranglings, we won't get a remastered version of "Collection" which is by far the best Spyro Gyra compilation that there is in terms of track selections. This is the next best thing but the redeeming factor is that the sound quality is much better. If you can get your hands on a used copy of "Collection" which I believe you can order even from this Amazon site, you would have a truer best of package of this band.
Good - but..........2005-06-21
I bought this "Best Of" selection for one particular song - "Morning Dance" that I heard on the radio. The rendition of "Morning Dance" included here is a live recording made in 1997, not a studio recording done in 1979. Otherwise, a pleasant selection to listen to, similar to Kenny G. I still wish companies would put "Original Recording, Original Artist" on the label. If not, indicate that it is not on the song selection.
In My Book, Not their Very Best.......2005-01-29
I have been a fan of Spyro Gyra since I bought their first live album "Access All Areas". I found their music to be inventive, interesting and good listening. Their "Very Best" album does provide a few of my favorites, however, for the most part, it does not satisfy me. In my "perfect world" of Spyro Gyra, I prefer their more upbeat songs and my "very best" would contain that taste in their music. For those of you with these preferences, I give you my idea of their very best and a second best for your consideration.
First of all, my 2 favorite albums of theirs are "In Modern Times" and their live album, "Road Scholars". From "In Modern Times", I would put Feelin' Fine, Julio's Party, Lucky Bounce and Florida Straits in my very best and Feelin' Fine, Part 2 in my next best. "Road Scholars" would have 4 cuts in Breakfast at Igor's (Tom Schuman's keyboard solo is incredible!), Ariana, Daddy's Got a New Girl and Shanghai Gumbo. Their studio cut on that album, Best Friends, would be on my second best list.
Other "very best" cuts would be Wiggle Room from their "Deep End" album with its' Summer Flying recording on my second best. Next, I would select Playtime from "Heart of the Night", Big Dance Number from "Original Cinema" and its' Funky Tina on my second best. "Got the Magic" would have Havana Moonlight and Silk and Satin in my very best with Breezeway and the title cut in the next best compilation. Their "20/20" album would have 2 cuts in my very best, Deep End and Ruled by Venus with Unwritten Letter on the second best. I would also include Serpent in Paradise from "Access All Areas" and Percolator from their "Incognito" album would conclude my "very best " compilation (Catching the Sun from Incognito would hit my second best list).
My second best grouping would conclude with the following cuts: the title cut from their "Carnaval" album; Swing Street from "Point of View"; Walk the Walk and South Beach from "Dreams Beyond Control"; Little Linda and Rockin' a Heart Place from "Love and Other Obsessions"; and finally, of course, their lone hit, Morning Dance from the same named album.
There you go...just another "point of view" from a fan who enjoys Spyro Gyra music. Good listening to you!!
Not Enough Tracks to be the Very Best Of.......2003-01-17
I was expecting more out of this album. There are still many best songs unavailable on this album especially their previously unreleased tracks (then) such as "Catching The Sun", "Old San Juan", "Incognito", "Shakedown", "Mallet Ballet".
I don't know how many more "Best of" labels do wee need to get in order to cover for the "Very Best of" because some 'best of' have repetitous songs in them.
But it's Okay though. Whatever it is, Spyro Gyra is worth listening to. Try downloading "Florida Straits" - they are still the best ever. Way to go Spyra!
Very Nice, yet, they have so much more to give..........2002-10-11
I like this album, it is fun to listen to, and I enjoy it. Yet, those guys have so much more to express, that it can't be sumed into the 3-4-5 minutes long peices in this album. In my opinion, they should focus on playing as if they were in concert, not paying attention to things as the number of CDs the result will get. Give us the 10 minutes long parts that I heard in your concert and the great energy filled improvises, and then it'll really be the Best of Spyro Gyra.
Of course, it does not mean this album is not good, it is really great, and maybe i'm just wishing for things that can't become true. If so, then this album is the best of Spyro Gyra.
