Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music for lovers - past, present, and future........2004-03-15

I bought the LP about thirty years ago. Listening to the CD today still gives me goosebumps. Isn't that level of emotional response what listening to quality music is all about? I have and enjoy other Turrentine albums, each with its own particular appeal, but this is the most arousing.

5 out of 5 stars All time favorite!.......2002-09-23

I grew up on Stanley's music- this album is top of the line jazz. Turrentine sets the standard for jazz for me. I can't find another album that compares to "Pieces", except for maybe Chuck Mangione! Another all time favorite- oldies but goodies!!!

3 out of 5 stars String arrangements too syrupy for a top-rate artist.......1999-10-12

The music in this album is just fine without the dreaded strings. If you could mentally "cut-off" them while listening, it certainly is excellent jazz.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best ever!.......1999-07-15

I used to do a jazz show out in California, and this was one of my most-requested albums - no particular cut, the whole album!

If you like sax, mellow jazz and soulful rythym, this is the album for you. Listen to "Blanket on the Beach" and you will be hooked.

4 out of 5 stars Great 'escape' sound. Stress reliever!.......1998-10-19

One of my all time favorites. This was one of my first jazz albums I ever purchased and has always been a great classic to me. The title track is great as well as 'Midnight and You' and 'Blanket on the beach' are sure to winners. This artist sometimes gets a bad rap for being a mood artist. But if that's what you need to unwind or for 'other' needs then you will not be disappointed. This album helped me put my--then date and now-- wife in the mood 20 years ago over a candlelight dinner. That was the night she popped the question to me! Thank you Stanley Turrentine. She is a dream!

The album flows well and the track arrangements are good. The piano, and accoustic backup is first class. Strings add the proper mood (sorry) at the right time, but at times sound a little hastly done; however, do not detract from the theme of the song.

Again this is one of my personal classics. I am glad to see it on CD. If you are experimenting with mood jazz you will not be disappointed.
