5 out of 5 stars sophisto funk.......2004-07-19

there are times jazz is just too outside. "smooth jazz" is alot of soporific swill. most dance music can be sooo repetitious. where can you find technically skilled players with some outrageous funk and melodically addictive? right here! never heard of em til i was looking at "see sellers other items," saw this, played the sample "je pense a toi" thats all it took. i'm listening to nocturnal (another of their releases) while i'm typing this and it's kickin too!

5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2004-03-31

I'd been searching for a sound. I found part of it in the jazz world...that soothing, instrumental mix that remains timeless. Yet it was proving difficult to locate anything that related, yet had some serious funk to it. Found several that played up the tenor sax, but after a while that can become monotonous. And then I happened across F8E on the Amazon listen site. I immediately bought all 3 cd's, and am a true fan. They're multi-faceted, and true to their form, withouth wavering into unusual territory to 'explore' and 'find themselves'. They stay true to the groove, and for that reason, I will - without hesitation - purchase the next offering.

5 out of 5 stars Feeling the funk a little more than last cd NOCTURNAL.......2003-06-23

This cd is laced thick with the funk. Percision playing...great grooves. A cd for your head to nod to beginning to end. Excellent mix of jazz and funk. If your looking for a pool of sonic satisfaction...jump in. It's deep

5 out of 5 stars Groove music at its best...........2003-06-09

Thick funk laced jazz...you cant go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars the third time is the charm.......2003-01-16

The group Four80East moves solidly into the land of jazz-funk on "Round 3," its most lively album yet. Fans of the group know that continuing the smoky jazz and electronic textures present on its previous releases would have been enough to make this a good album, but bandleaders Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace added a large number of rock and retro-styled touches to many of the tracks, giving them a more obvious variety than on "Nocturnal" (2001) and their self-titled debut (1998).

The biggest difference between this release and the others, beyond the new sounds, is a greater level of consistency. For me, the prior F80E releases tended to weaken in track quality as the album progressed, especially on "Nocturnal." This problem doesn't exist on "Round 3" as all the tracks are excellent.

"Montreux" and "3 Out Of 4" are signature tracks, easily recognized and highly accessable. "TKO" with its boxing background noises, Rat Pack-style horn samples, and acoustic bass take the F80E sound in a new post-modern direction, while still remaining recognizable. "Last Flight To L.A.," with its bouncy bass line, Latin percussion, and electric piano flourishes, gives a decidely Southern California feel, quite a feat for a couple of Canadian jazz artists. The last track, "Burn Down The Bayou" kind of sounds like what might happen if Nine Inch Nails and Medeski Martin & Wood met up and started jamming.

If you like Four80East's prevoius albums or those of Down To The Bone, you will love this album. Casual fans of other contemporary jazz (like Medeski Martin & Wood) will find plenty to like as well. It even rocks enough for the pop crowd. Buy it without hesitation.
