Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Alien Jazz.......2006-10-21

I find it ironic the cover of this album is green - alien green. This guy smokes through arpeggios like there's no tomorrow. I've heard other recordings, but this one is the best I've heard so far. Unfortunately, I haven't heard Virtuoso #1. Looks like I need to get cracking. Everyone should have a complete collection of Joe Pass recordings. Especially if you play guitar - or jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Pass-perfect solo guitar.......2006-07-29

If you're looking at Virtuoso No. 4 chances are you know about the first one and, hopefully, love it. Well, this set comes from the same sessions as Virtuoso No. 1. SO, is it as good? Can it be? Absolutely yes. No one, ever has, and doubtfully ever will again, play guitar like Joe Pass. He is unparalleled as a solo guitarist. He will, at once, inspire you and possibly make you want to sell your guitar(s). If you want to know how to play solo jazz guitar this is where to start. Pick up any of the Virtuoso cds and also pick up his cds teaming up with Ella. There are 2 ways to describe Mr. Pass' playing and both are the names of posthumous albums of his, "Unforgettable," and "What is there to say?"

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Genius.......2004-08-24

I honestly don't know how to begin describing the sheer talent and mastery of this guitarist. Joe Pass was the rare musician who not only had phenomenal technical skill with his instrument, but he also had deep and complex understanding of jazz composition. In short, what you get with every piece performed by Mr. Pass is pure genius that will reach your head and your heart at the same time. In Virtuoso No. 4, I have heard the guitar taken to a level that I doubt has been surpassed by anyone in the world of jazz.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Ever.......2003-06-24

Joe Pass is simply the greatest guitarist ever. His bottomless improvisational techniques boggle the mind and offer the ears something new with each repeated listening to any of his songs. His ability to modulate seamlessly at will and fill his melodies with harmonized chords and walking bass lines take your breath away. Pass's lightning fast single-note and chordal abilities are used only when needed, keeping the artistry of each some song in balance with its complexity. This double-CD album consists of fast and slow songs of all intensities. Most are acoustic with Pass playing alone without missing a beat. From a guitarist's point of view, while the general spoon-fed public continues to idolize the rather limited skills of Hendrix, Vaughan and all other 'novice guitarists' compared to this ultimate virtuoso, Joe Pass sits quietly in the jazz world with skills so beyond comprehension, it would take more than a couple of lifetimes to scrape at his level. But the true genius of Joe Pass aside from his technical mastery is that he made beautiful music through the gorgeous ornamentation of his lush jazz melodies.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best jazz CDs ever..........2001-08-17

Very few albums have I purchased that I continue to listen to regularly after a few years. This is one of them that I do continue to listen to - for 16+ years. Everybody I've played this album for loves it - it's made my Christmas shopping pretty easy. You can't go wrong with Joe and a couple beers!
