Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It gets even better over successive listenings.......2006-04-07

Most of you purchased this CD for "Sweet Baby" (which I didn't know was written by him until very recently), but will be pleasantly surprised if you listen to it all the way through.

There are lots of gems, like "Starting Again" and "Searching My Mind." There's also a song that Dr. Dre sampled-- "Mothership Connection."

Well worth the purchase price of a used CD.

5 out of 5 stars George Duke.......2005-08-14

An excellent buy and price. I've always heard George Duke's music when growing up and now I have the opportunity to listen and appreciate it even more.

2 out of 5 stars My Goodness - What Happened?.......2005-04-18

I searched George Duke because he was on the piano for Jean Luc Ponty's Live at Donte's Hollywood session in 1969. What an awesome bop stylist! But what did I find? Schmaltzy pop. Go back in time for this guy's best stuff.

4 out of 5 stars sweet baby!!.......2003-06-24

like most oldies buffers out there,i bought this too mainly for the hit, "sweet baby" one of george duke's very best!! blends very well when making a lovely ballads tape,n you know they are forever!!!!j.h. of dover

4 out of 5 stars variety makes this album.......2003-05-02

Although this collection is shallow in comparasin to keyboardist/composer/vocalist George Duke's extensive body of work, it is a representative sample of his journeys through the worlds of jazz, funk, R&B and pop during the late '70s and '80s.

Many tracks feature the contributions of legendary bassist Stanley Clarke, who headlined two albums with Duke during the 1980s. The results of their collaborations are excellent and funky to boot; check out their take on the funk classic "Mothership Connection."

Variety rules among the other tracks on this release, "Shine On" flirts with disco, "Starting Again" dabbles in 'quiet storm', and "Sweet Baby" is more pop than one expects from Duke (in fact, I heard it at Walgreens the other day).

The pair of tracks that really sell this release, though, are the funky, funky tracks "Dukey Stick" and "Reach For It." These sound a little dated by today's standards, but outside of Roy Ayers or The Blackbyrds, few late '70s acts could stay as funky in a jazz context as Duke. The are classics, right up there with the aforementioned artists work of the era and that of Parliment and Funkadelic.

If you're a fan of George Duke, contemporary jazz, '80s style R&B, or building up a funk classics library, you'll love this album.
