Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars What a waste of talent.......2006-11-02

I have been buying his albums for years and never regretted a single purchase, until NOW!!!But Hey George you more than make up for it in 'Absolutely Benson', so Ill forgive for this.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Six Play from GB!!.......2006-08-06

The track list for the CD I own is slightly different:
1. Six Play
2. Whole Man
3. Irreplaceable
4. Loving Is Better Than Leaving
5. Strings Of Love
6. Cell Phone
7. Black Rose
8. Stairway To Love
9. Reason For Breathing
10. Missing You

Contemporary urban grooves, a quiet storm feel, and loads of guitar playing in the background best sum up this CD.

Opening cut `Six Play', a lovely ballad with a catchy chorus and backing vocals, some excellent harmonizing vocals from a female vocalist, is an ode to his six play guitar.

`Loving Is Better Than Leaving' is another stunning guitar sprinkled ballad with a killer chorus, and lyrics about remaining in a painful relationship. The flamenco tinged `Strings of Love' is awesome and features some killer guitar licks.

One of my favourites is the moving, midtempo `Cell Phone', and ode to his late father that has George singing in a yearning voice, asking the phone operator if a cell phone can get to heaven as he would love to hear his father's voice again. Like `Six Play, this also features some great harmonizing from some female vocalist.

Other standouts are the acoustic/string filled beauty; `Black Rose', and closing track, a largely instrumental cover of Case's `Missing You'.

A great album with wonderful six play from George...

5 out of 5 stars Surprising mix.......2006-02-02

I picked the album up at the local library just because it was George Benson. Starting it up in the car, I was surprised that the first song was more about vocals than guitar, but I gave it a chance because I enjoy his singing also (cf. "On Broadway"). I'm glad I did. It seems to me to be his most complete album. There's not one song I don't like. The grooves are bouncy, the melodies memorable and the performances honest. "Take You Out" is my favorite. "Cell Phone" is haunting. These songs stay with you for a very long time. I've been missing them all since returning the album, so I've decided to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Just Lay Back And Enjoy.......2006-01-01

George Benson is truly an amazing jazz player and singer-- Irreplaceable is by far one of the most beautiful pieces he has came out with--and when I heard the way he did Luther Vandross song,I was thinking the whole time how good those two would be making a song together--I love Black Rose the best because his background vocalists were AWESOME!!! My fiancee listens to alot of rap and R&B but when he listened to this album he was blown away.I am telling you for those who do not listen to jazz or don't think it is "upbeat" enough for you--I dare you to listen to this one album and then you tell me your thoughts--
Beautiful,Smooth,Sensational and Relaxing is how i would rate this album--oh yeah--HAPPY NEW YEAR AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL--

3 out of 5 stars A radio album, nothing wrong with it, but be aware.......2005-11-27

This album has been very critizised I don't think George himself could care less however. Since he decided to cross the boundaries that separe Jazz from"popular" easy music he's been pointet out as a modern day Lucyfer and sent out of music heaven. Me, as a long time George fan and Jazz guitarist myself have to say that this album is surely not one of his best even if I really appreciate even his most commercial works. Let's clear a fact. This album is not a jazz album and George which is a master musician absolutly know it very well, believe me. This album is equally far from his jazz-fusion albums like Week end in L.A. for example where he played a lot of Jazz guitar. Unfortunatly, this album is a little far from his latest greatest albums like That's right, Standing together, Absolute Benson or Love remembers. This one is less balanced. It is a pure radio album I would call it. The guitar is almost absent. The songwriting is nothing special I have to say. George obviously sings great as he has always did by the way, but the material here is not very special. So is a Benson album without the guitar, without Jazz and without good songwriting. You see by yourself which is an album which has some flaws.

This said if you take the time to listen to it a couple of times, you will find that in the end it's a good product. I mean a product, not a work of art. A product for the radios. But a good one. There's nothing wrong with it, simply be aware that it is an album that you would not compare to Benson's best work, not in the jazz field, but neither in the fusion, pop or smooth jazz field. This is an album for the radios, to get airplay. In the end it will not stay firmly in my listening schedule, but I think I could give it a try occasionally.

But, ... this album has a really strong point. The production. It is recorded INCREDIBLY well, and I really mean it. Audiophile quality. The stage is very realistic, the vocal timbres exceptional (instruments timbres too), the overall sound, clean, full without compromises. The presentation of the music, since the first breath the vocal girl sing in the first tune, will leave you breathless. Impressive high definition for a stunning realism! Even the electronic instruments, keyboards, loop, samples and stuff are recorded with state of the art quality. I have to say this because there are some audiophiles out there that buy records for their recording qualities. This one is ABSOLUTLY exceptional. My Avalon loudspeakers really really love it.
