Customer Reviews:
perfect out-bop.......2006-10-12
Listened to this one again in the car this morning...YEAH! For me, Hill is the perfect blend of Herbie Hancock and Cecil Taylor; his playing and his compositions are just so freakin hip. Charles Tolliver sounds great with a bell-clear but sightly tart tone and a Lee Morgan/Freddie Hubbard/Woody Shaw vibe that hits hard every time...now I'll have to dig out some of those vinyl LPs with Stanley Cowell. Joe Farrell, Billy Higgins...this record is excellent. I'm looking forward to spinning Hill's new one (Timelines, also with Tolliver) on the way home to compare.
Andrew Hill's Dark Classic.......2005-11-27
The series of reissues from Andrew Hill's 1960s Blue Note catalogue never ceases to amaze. Hill was so prolific in 68 that several albums couldn't find a place in Blue Note's release schedule at the time. "Dance with Death" was released much later but it now stands as one of Hill's very best: a seamless mix of modal, soul jazz and avant garde as good as anything Miles was coming up with at the time. Here you get six tracks plus a bonus alternate version of the brilliant title cut. The line up is: Hill-piano, the great Billy Higgins-drums, Victor Sproles-bass and the superb double lead of Charles Tolliver-trumpet and Joe Farrell-sax. The melodic lines are clean and logical - they seem complex at first but soon lodge in the mind. The arrangements and soloing are all superb. As the title suggests, this album outdoes Miles in the prince of darkness stakes - there's even a track called "Black Sabbath"!
Better than Point of Departure.......2005-09-24
Yellow Violet, Fish N' Rice and the two versions of Dance With Death are great. Shades of Monk and Lee Morgan on this very assessable CD. Not to be missed.
This Album's a Killer.......2004-10-14
this is nearly as good as last year's 'passing ships' and makes a perfect companion piece (recorded in 1968 vis-a-vis 1969 for 'passing ships'). it features the consistently superb front line of chuck tolliver and joe farrell and the ever-snappy billy higgins on skins. andrew hill simply sounds like no one else. he is one of the unheralded masters of the last 40 years. this cd marks hill's place in the pantheon of all-time post-bop greats.
not to be missed.
p.s. this album also features a track called 'black sabbath'! :)
