Customer Reviews:
Perfection - an amazing example of Lenny's genius.......2006-07-30
This album was out of print in any form for the past 36 years,
it was at the top of my list as a collector - the "holy grail" of my record collecting - I even paid $50 for an LP copy a few years ago, and now it is finally out on a CD and available to the general public.
I have listened to this album so many hundreds of times, that I have just about every note memorized, and it plays in my head like a radio when I am out on bike trips or sitting alone someplace...Some of the studio sounds on this album might seem a little dated today, but Lenny's genius, variety of combined styles, and sensitivity will never grow old.
Give a close listen to how he develops his solos and harmonizes in songs like " Don't Think Twice It's Alright", or "Music To Watch Girls By".
Lenny's take on "Georgia on My Mind" is a classic, I think it is the best version of the song since Django Reinhardt's recording with singer Freddy Taylor back in 1936!
This album, together with the live album made in the sae year - "The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau" are together a pair of "must have" essential recordings for anyone interested in Jazz guitar, virtuoso guitar, and in ecelctic mixtures of styles - Flamenco meets classical, meets Country, all crossed with Jazz harmonies.
The Classic Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Album!!.......2006-06-12
What a pleasure it is to see this album available again after being out of print for nearly forty years--and with a bonus track to boot! This is where the realm of fingerstyle jazz guitar begins--a true classic that no serious guitar fan should miss. Too many highpoints to mention but only one nylon string jazz guitarist could have conceived the solo Lenny Breau plays on Don't Think Twice and his original Taranta is the model of jazz/flamenco fusion. Awesome!! Now if only The Velvet Touch of Lenny Breau Live would be reissued, we'd be blessed!
A God of Guitar.......2005-12-20
Praise be! What a rare treat that this late sixties RCA studio recording -- made under the guiding hand of Chet Atkins -- should finally appear on CD! If you play, woodshed or just fool around with guitar and you haven't heard our man Breau, then you ain't goin' to Heaven. Nice re-mastering; the at times overly-heavy accompanying bass on the original seems nicely-muted just a tad. Bass & drums are just along for the ride here (when they do appear) & discreetly stay outa the way so you can concentrate on Lenny, who didn't seem to realize a lotta stuff he did on one guitar was impossible. 'King of the Road' & 'A Hard Day's Night' are worth the price of the CD. Winnipeg, Canada had this guy pretty much all to themselves throughout much of the Sixties, & I daresay a Helluva lot of school & college homework didn't get done while we sat around slack-jawed listening to this man perform. He came to a sad end, but he left us this; so I know where he went.
