Customer Reviews:
Great CD, but with a few reservations .......2005-06-19
"Still Small Voice" is a wonderful CD and Paul Jackson, Jr. is one heck of a guitar player. I had listened to his music several years ago but had fallen "out of touch" with his stuff and it was great to rediscover him on this new CD. This guy can flat out PLAY GUITAR!!!! He has a unique sound and this disc cooks along nicely. I only wish the first track was "Walkin'" (an infectious groove that hypnotically goes on and on and on)instead of the title track. I've always wondered why most artists bury the best track instead of leading off with it. I have one pet peeve that Several other amazon.com reviewers have mentioned online before: Why do "smooth jazz" instrumentalists screw up a good CD with vocals? Jackson is guilty here of that. Things are perking along nicely when, all of a sudden, you here his son's voice on "Park Tour Intro" and then about :40 of Jackson explaining his "Park medley." Needless. Worthless. Throws the groove off!!! Why rattle your listeners with this unexpected little ditty? Probably nothing more than a vanity thing but it simply doesn't belong here. Moving on: the park medley was quite nice...almost reminded me of a Donald Byrd and the Blackbyrds background groove in places. "Changed" also took me by surprise. The vocals threw me for a loop at first. Then, I read the liner notes and learned how religious Jackson is. I'm guessing that "Changed" is synonymous (in a religious sense) with "Saved." "Dios te Dendica" has a latin flair that seems a little out of place here. I like this CD a lot, but it's a little uneven and covers too many musical bases to suit me. I'll still check out some of Jackson's earlier work. 4 Stars....on musical ability. He loses 1 star on the lack of a total smooth jazz CD.
Excellent smooth Jazz at its best!.......2005-04-24
With "Still Small Voice" Paul Jackson Jr. has delivered one of these classic smooth jazz albums that hopefully will also be played on radio for many, many years to come. Every true smooth jazz connoisseur will fall in love with the music of Paul Jackson Jr. as it reminds us a lot of George Benson and more recently of Norman Brown. He's just a master of his instrument. Apparently he plays a semi-hollow Gibson which has a little bit more edge to it than the commonly used full hollowbody jazz boxes which e.g. George Benson uses ... and actually I like Paul's use of the semi-hollow Gibson as he uses it in a spirited way in the right places, while the overall tone remains smooth.
Once again I think that this CD has been overlooked so far and I only found it by "accident" so to speak. It also seems that while Paul has garnered lots of recognition with the pros in the studios over the years, the general public has not yet discovered Paul Jackson Jr. and I sure hope that this CD will accomplish that.
In the huge quantity of music being produced these days, it's hard to find a real gem and once you find one, it's like the eagerly sought after reward at the end of an extensive treasure hunt through the jungle.
I'll keep this CD in my car in the rotation of my 6-disc player and I'm sure I'll listen to it dozens of times over the next few months -- it's really great music. Truly a job well done!
In a League By Himself .......2005-03-26
This guy is simply in a league all by himself. If you don't like his version of "It's a Shame," you don't like music, period. Nobody can smoke a guitar like this L.A. superstar.....nobody.
Don't expect a highly thrilling music experience.......2005-02-28
One of the greatest compliments for a guitarplayer is to hear that he has a truly unique sound. It's hard enough to distinguish yourself as a guitarplayer these days. Paul Jackson, however, does it time and again. That alone is an achievement that places Paul Jackson among the likes of Phil Keaggy and Earl Klugh. So did I enjoy this album? In short: it's ok. The musical performance by Paul and the other musicians are top notch, as you'd expect. But there are some moments where songs seem to lack the absolute definition you'd want to hear. It builds up to a climax, but then fails to define the climax itself. The riffs and licks are so smooth & the sound so clean, that it makes you long for some distortion to balance the mix. After having waited 6 weeks for the album to arrive by international mail and paying an additional import fee (the album was not available in the Netherlands), I was a little disappointed. Separately, each of the songs is worth listening to, but as a whole, the album is short of the emotion that keeps you bound to the stereo throughout. I really hope that Paul Jackson Jr will do a live solo album someday, I think that will bring out more of his enormous versatility.
A talent like no other.......2004-12-20
On several occasions now, I've tried to write a fair and accurate review of Paul Jacksons material..truth is, he's become such an enormous force in the music industry, that to focus on any single project would be to do him a great injustice. Paul's body of work stretches back to his amazing debut 'I came to Play' which if memory serves me was released sometime in 1988. Needless to say I have purchased everything Paul has ever recorded as a solo artist (unless I've missed something obscure). From the moment Paul relesed his debut, it crystallised everything I had already known for a long time. He's an awesome and incredibly versatile talent. By the time he released 'I came to play', I had been wondering just how long it was going to take for him to put out some solo material, having been thrilled for several years with his amazing rhythm guitar work for literally hundreds of household artists. It took me a while to try and pinpoint what makes Paul so unique as a guitarist, and then it came to me....He has this knack for creating irresistible riffs, and he does it time and time again....Michael Jackson "P.Y.T", BeBe & CeCe Winans "Heaven", Surface "A nice time for lovin", Sherrick "Just Call", Luther Vandross "Dream Lover"....and for those of you who really know your stuff....Jermaine Jackson "You like me don't you?" and "I'm just too shy". The list is literally endless, as his his ability to create an infinite array of intoxicating melodies. His solo catalogue "I came to play". "Out of the shadows", "A river in the desert"," Duets...never alone"."Power of the String" and "Still Small voice" really is a must have for those who appreciate timeless melodies and incredible musicianship. It goes without saying that Paul only surrounds himself with the best of musicians, notably his longtimne friend and formaer label mate Gerald Albright. Being a closet musician myself, I'de love to see Paul in concert one of these days. being based in Asia, he's not as accessible as I'd like. I live in hope. Paul, if you do get around to reading this (Yeah right,...where's he gonna get the time?!), When are you coming out to Singapore to play?? Congratulations on yet another great release, in a genre that unfortunately produces far too much mediocrity. Your musical integrity is as solid as ever. by the way, I loved 'Meaning of love" that you wrote and performed on for Gary Brown. I know he's gone on to writing and producing, but is he ever gonna record again? The more I listen to 'Still, Small Voice", the more I feel that this could become your musical tour de force. Irresistible dude!
