Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to love it, but I am not able to..........2006-08-20

Sorry Brad, you are good, this album - NOT!

Like others said before:

* Emotionally Sterile
* Repetitive
* Simplistic and Boring
* Some tracks really make your ear drums HURT!
* Feels too Computerized, no room for the slightest improvisation

Besides the nice cover.... yep.. just a nice cover

Sorry brad, better luck next time :)

2 out of 5 stars BOOORRRRING..........2006-04-08

Well, ok, Mehldau's arrangements aren't bad...He does a great version of "Paranoid Android" but otherwise...WHERE'S THE ENERGY? There's really not a whole lot of excitement or energy in this album, and I do understand this as being a more laid back, mellowed-out album...but it is still possible to be more exciting, energetic, or emotional in this style. All three of these things are pretty much absent from this CD which ends up making it dull. :yawn:

5 out of 5 stars Song: Alvarado.......2005-03-17

I am very surprised none of the reviewers below mentioned anything about the song "Alvarado"; it is so well accomplished that I found it equal to the performances of great pianist such as Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Keith Jarret and Danilo Perez. Also, be carefull when judging sounds that our ears are not YET used to hearing. How many CD's have taken a few rounds of listening before getting to love them? If you are a true music lover, who is always seeking for new and different music, I know the answer is"many".Is "Largo" one of those CD's that require several listenings due to its innovations? Listen to "Alvarado" and find your own answer.

4 out of 5 stars A "successful" experiment........2005-01-09

I have read alot of (somewhat) negative reviews of this album and I just don't get it. I bought it only because I had heard Dear Prudence on digital cable's jazz radio station, and was surprised to find that two of my absolute favorites in the field of music (Matt Chamberlain and Jon Brion) were on the bill as well. I love traditional jazz but I really love when people push the limits of music and this album does exactly that. The songs are hauntingly beautiful, poignant, and at the same time just rippin' with energy. If you're a jazz purest you probably can't handle this album. But if you like to hear some great, innovative music performed by totally SICK (good) musicians, check out this album.

This was my first introduction to this amazing painist and his incredibly expressive playing. I can't wait to dive into the rest of his catalogue. Your's truly--One very inspired (and grateful) musician.

4 out of 5 stars FRANKLIN AVENUE is a weird low-key masterpiece.......2004-11-15

I agree with everything that Patrick Burnette & Henry Shapiro said. But I still love this record. And Patrick wasn't exactly understating the situation when he complained about the piano's lowness in the mix. Brad's version of DEAR PRUDENCE outfabs The Fabs. I love those dark crush-chords. On the other hand, John Rodriguez is dead-right about WAVE. Although I'd rather hear Brad do bossa-nova than hear him do Radiohead for the 37th time. DUSTY MCNUGGET and WHEN IT RAINS are 2 other superior tracks. My favorite track is a weird low-key track called FRANKLIN AVENUE.
