5 out of 5 stars Magnificiently Mellow!!!.......2006-03-27

Originally recorded in the mid-70's, who could ever forget the sax sounds of John Klemmer! A one-of-a-kind wonder where the artistry came together perfectly.

The title song "Touch" is the opening number and was a big hit back in its day. It still sounds fresh today. "Sleeping Eyes" is riveting full of soul with John on the sax and Dave Grusin on the keyboards. Other musicians that round out the group are two from Tom Scott's L.A. Express. "Body Pulse" is pretty hot. "Tone Row Weaver" begins very toned-down but hold on as it builds into an 8-minute long seering number.

Smooth jazz stations still play this one 30 years later. While some purport this sound to be the predecessor to the "smooth jazz" genre, I feel it is a perfect balance between the hot sounds of the 60's and the cool sax sounds of the 80's. This is a fine collection that is perfect for kicking back and relaxing. Pure joy!

5 out of 5 stars THIS HAS TO BE PLAYED AT MY FUNERAL: MEANS EVERYTHING!.......2005-03-03

I am a reputed OLD SOUL. I was only 8 years old and always asked my mother to play it, over and over. The melodies were akin to Wayne Shorter (innocent and easy to remember, for the most part, yet powerful enough to stay with you throughout life). Now I'm 37, just re-purchased it after all these years of not hearing it and guess what? IT STILL GIVES ME THE SAME FEELING. Pure EUPHORIA. I'm a jazz vocalist who's heard and experiments with practically EVERYTHING: straight ahead, big band, fusion, avant garde, whatever...but JOHN KLEMMER remains at the top of my list, along with legends like Coltrane, Shorter and Davis. I get EXACTLY the same feeling from listening to each: pure emotion. The amazing thing is that Klemmer's sound is what most would consider 'smooth jazz' which is what I truly DO NOT like...but I think he has simply mastered OLD WITH NEW. Good music truly has no color: this white boy is B.A.D. (and that's G.O.O.D.)!

5 out of 5 stars John Klemmer's "Touch" you had to be there!.......2005-03-02

Listening to Klemmers Touch now after so many years, yes it's a bit dated but still so sweet. Being a teen and young adult in the mid to late 70's I was in the sordid rock camp of music and John Klemmer's Touch was something to behold, it reflected the late night romance after a night of rock n' roll craziness. I recomend this and Barefoot Ballet to a new generation of listeners. Just to find the peace and love of a past generation, and nothing more.............

4 out of 5 stars A 1970s cliche, but one of the better ones.......2004-11-17

Jazz fusion was one of the hot new things in the mid-70s and it (briefly, in my case) appealed to those of us who had no love of disco or new wave (Okay, I liked some of the new wave). Most of it seems hopelessly dated and hokey now (just listen to Chick Corea for a good example). "Touch" is no exception and the vocals are especially annoying, but, at its best, the horn playing goes beyond the genre. There also is a real mood and subtlety here; it's not elevator music. Klemmer is clearly a leap above Kenny G and even the over-rated droning of his 70s contemporary in record collections, Keith Jarrett. This is an "album" that evokes good times from "back in the day". When I bought this CD, I had not heard this music in at least 15 years, but as soon as the title track played, I was pleasantly taken back in time. I don't wallow in nostalgia and would like to forget many aspects of the 70s (the clothes, Richard Nixon, etc.), but this is one of those "soundtrack of its time" recordings that's always welcome on my CD player. I'd be a little worried if people from a later era enjoyed it--it doesn't really fit any other time and it's not really great jazz. Many of us have moved beyond this kind of music and I can think of any number of better jazz players or albums now, but this is a thing of beauty for what it is and I'm glad it's available in CD.
