Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Music review.......2007-01-11

Excellent! Probably one of the best CDs ever produced. The music is endearing and memorable and should be in every jazz collector's list.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful helping of Mangione..........2006-11-26

I always loved the epic quality of this soundtrack. I was a Mangione fan back since my high school days, and I loved this album dearly. Usually when modern jazz artists include lyrics, it's a disaster. Not here. They work very well in the songs. I never saw the film (I read that it's awful), but the soundtrack is one of Chuck's best offerings. Reportedly, he was so inspired by this project that he recorded 23 1/2 hours (!) of music for it. Obviously, most of it couldn't have been released in the LP era (it would have made at least a 25 LP set), but it would be nice to have some of it released (as part of an anniversary edition). Pick up one of Mangione's best albums...

4 out of 5 stars Classical music.......2006-11-10

This score is one of the classics. The score has earned much more credit than the movie itself. Whether that is fair I can't judge, I haven't seen the film. The music however is very good and a must for Mangione-lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Chuck's best IMHO. .......2006-10-13

Many years ago before I even heard the name Chuck Mangione I heard this music only once on a radio in far away country. Immediately I liked it so much that I memorized the name of the record. Few years later, in 1984, I was in another far away country when I spotted two cassettes with the soundtrack in a record store. As "imports" they were quite expensive. I bought them after the storeowner gave me a little discount. The tapes lasted me only a few years because all of my friends loved them and kept borrowing them. I am glad to see the soundtrack on a CD and am glad to see well-deserved five stars for the beautiful music.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely OUTSTANDING.......2006-08-25

As a musician who has played a gamut of styles, I can wholeheartedly say that this collection of music is quite possibily the tightest music you will ever hear. The listener is grabbed by the throat with the overature and is held throughout the album with no hope of escape.

As a kid, my brother (a trumpet player) patterned his style to the likes of Chuck Mangione. As such, I was inundated with every vinyl the man produced. Of all of them, none caught my attention as "Children of Sanchez".

I'm a sax player, which we all know is not as "important" as a trumpet player, of course. However, this whole line of music illustrates that everyone needs to be on the same measure at the same time in that moment in the universe. The overature alone demonstrates this need, where it would be disastrous if just one instrument was out of synch with the rest. Aside from presenting the importance of learning how to tongue triplets on your given instrument, it shows the power of united musicians who collectively find the same vein of inspiration in music.

I have listened to just about every Mangione recording available, and I keep coming back to this one as the one that gives the one-two punch of musical excellence every player dreams of achieving. It is not only a joy to listen to, but it is also a lesson in mastering the basics of playing an instrument our teachers tried to teach us that leads to greatness in performers.

"Children of Sanchez" is, by far, a sure bet for a purchase and should be mandatory for high school bands as a teaching instrument throughout the world for perfection in technique.

Oh, and it's just a darned good listen, as well!
