4 out of 5 stars Nightcap - Marilyn Scott.......2007-02-28

The title describes very well the album on the tempo of the songs which are slow and easy for late night listening. If you are looking for some heavy and fast jazz this is not the album for you. The band accompaniment is very good and matches very well to the silky voice of Ms Marilyn Scott's.
However the title "Here's The Rainy Day" is played a bit on the slow side, but "Stardust" is well arranged. The song "Isn't This A Lovely Day" could do with a more lively rhythm. In general the album is pleasant to listen to for a relaxing evening.

5 out of 5 stars I always did have a thing for blondes..........2006-04-22

i discovered ms. scott's greatest hits collection " handpicked," about a year ago at a used bookstore. by the end of the album, i had become very taken with her and her sound. " Nightcap" is a fine collection of songs, which gives Marilyn enough opportunities to show off her singing voice and she doesn't dissapoint. her voice is smooth, never saccarine. and the supporting cast, led by george duke, make her sound elegant. i loved her take on the charlie chaplin tune " smile," " stardust," is a wonderful tune that sounds good no matter who sings it, but she makes it special. she never overdoes it, and she uses all the lovely nuances, the little things singers do to make a song effective. in the song " if it's the last thing i do," she sings " i'm gonna make you love me..."

trust me, i don't think in real life she has to work hard at it...

5 out of 5 stars Whew....give in to this........2005-05-01

Marilyn is smokey, succulent, and passionate. I heard tenor sax, percussion, keyboards, and guitars accompanying with perfectly timed crescendos in "Here's To Life", my absolute favorite song on this cd. The lyrics (I'm guessing the lyricist is Phyllis Molinary since Artie Butler is a producer and keyboard artist)described what many of us feel when reviewing our lives and will leave you completely mellowed out with a huge smile on your face. I cannot play it just once. The selections are all excellent. If you are seeking to add to your female jazz vocalist collection, this is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent ! .......2005-02-25

Scott has always been a perfectionist, and this album is another gem in her admirable collection of jewels.
She is one of the most consistent and gifted jazz vocalists on the market, sometimes a little overlooked, compare to the too hype, too lucky and too overexposed acts such as Diana Krall,Natalie Cole,Peter Cincotti and the glamourous cover- girls Jane Monheit and Tierney Sutton.
Her phrasing is just superb and soulful, the songs are perfectly
delivered, the feelings are heartfelt and beautifully expressed.
The production, well, the production is simply brilliant. It's another fantastic project by the only and one George Duke who has literally outdone himself in two spectacular productions in a row, this one with Marilyn and ,few months ago, with the latest offering from the incomparable Regina Belle, the magnificent, sumptuous masterpiece 'Lazy Afternoon'.
Here, with George "Midas" Duke's help, everything shines as solid gold.
George, you are a Genius and the number ONE among the jazz pianists, arrangers and producers.
And you ,Marilyn, you are just great !!
