5 out of 5 stars Hits the sweet spot.......2006-01-03

Talented, versatile and confident, are a few words that can describe Grover's cuts.
He is one of the very few, who has able grasps a constant following for all the years he has gifted us.

He fluidly morph from his early days of traditional, to (what most of us remember him as) one the funkiest saxes with the CTI and Motown years, then to his latter years of smooth jazz, he has always kept us captivated with certain cuts we all can say "Ah man, that's Grover!" He was one who never stayed in the back of the pack with the changing times, and didn't limited himself with certain fortes.

I have been listening to Grover for over 35 years and his music still hits the senses of the soul. In my collection over the years, his name is repeated the most. Mr. Magic was his signature cut, but if you want pure funky Grover, take a listen to Black frost, it's all him, no other solos are used and I think it's his best tenor works of its time. He goes from high to low, short to long notes and even does battle with the horn section. I'm reviewing this album only because this was the first Grover album I purchased way back.

To get the full spectrum of Grover you must check out his other albums, Feels so Good, (Knucklehead) Reed Seed, (Loran's Dance) Paradise, and Live at the Bijou are a few. Go by the ratings and you won't go wrong. Grover will be missed, never forgotten and never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate trailblazer in jazz fusion history.........2005-11-19

This album was unique as it almost singlehandedly sparked the whole jazz fusion era that was to take grip in the early 70s, at least to say it shone a commercial spotlight on the whole genre. It still is even today considered a landmark album because the level of musicianship contained will never be surpassed. Grovers adaptation of Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorns "Passion Flower" almost equalled the original. The sound is enchanting on each track!
Some of the greatest session musicians of the 70s are contained on this c.d. Many like Grover, sadly are no longer around. By this i'm referring to the phenomenal guitarist Eric Gale who captivates you rigidly from his very first reverb drenched lick during his sensational solo on "Mister Magic". Eric Gale set the standard and laid down one of the most memorative, funky and passionate solos in jazz funk history. Absolute perfection. The 'tension & release' effect & feel in guitar playing was never better displayed..and no one can play this solo like Eric. Even today it makes the hair on my neck stand on end. Maybe even Eric would never have been able to replicate the solo because it just seems so spontaneously perfect. Grover never sounded as good as on this album and his next one "Feels So Good" which was almost part of the same concept as this one. This was the true sound of KUDU records in 1973. Beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2004-06-25

This album starts out with the 12 plus minute "Earth Tones"-starting itself with gentle nature sound effects and then
lurching into a deep,primal jazz/funk groove with Grover's sax
permateating every cravass in between! And a cover of the Billy
Strayhorn classic "Passion Flower" is given a treatment not
dissimilar to Coltrane. And then there's that title song-a moodily
grooving slice of funk with deep beats and light, sensual orchestration to die for!And the whole thing is capped off with
"Black Frost" whitch does'nt change alot!'Mister Magic' swings
in and out of tempo's,from jazz to funk and back all in little
mor then half an hour and is CLEARLY Grover Washington's artitic
statement of intent! If only he were here today to make more music
like this-I know alot of people who'd like to hear it.I would!

5 out of 5 stars NO MATCH.......2002-12-06

It is of courtesy that I write. The album is just wow at any time of the day. If you are a lover of JAZZ pick it up b4 it runs out! Go get it.

5 out of 5 stars The last great soul-jazz album.......2002-11-26

Recorded in late 1974 and released early 1975, this might be the last great soul-jazz album before things went the way of disco. Of Grover Washington's records, this and Inner City Blues are the ones to get, and luckily, they're still available (All the King's Horses and Soul Box are currently out of print). The four extended cuts begin with "Earth Tones", a Bob James penned tune where Washington eases into the pocket with his soprano and then digs WAY deep into the funk with his tenor. "Passion Flower" exhibits Grover's lyrical side before the title track kicks into its uplifting groove. "Black Frost" actually turns out to be a slow-burning funk cut and ends the set. Washington's subsequent Kudu albums, though solid, never found him getting so gritty and souful as he does here. Highly recommended.
