Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Piano Genius.......2007-03-28

This is a great album. I loved his two versions of Someone to watch over me and Over the Rainbow as these are two of my favorite songs.

5 out of 5 stars The magnificent reach.......2006-05-28

In my jazz- listening days many years ago I came upon the work of Art Tatum, and was captivated by it. I simply felt it was the best. He played with such sweep and such lyrical freedom. The great standard numbers did not lose their identity in his playing but rather were expanded and enhanced. The sweep of the playing and the great feeling of joy and freedom it gave remain in my mind.
What great music this man made.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!! Especially for all you piano junkies!.......2006-02-01

I just received this double CD today and I am STILL CATCHING MY BREATH! This is my first Tatum CD and what an introduction it is, I cannot bring myself to press stop on the CD player, just let it play all day!
In my opinion what makes this even more beautiful is that it is all solo Tatum, no other instruments to hold him back.
I would give this 2cd, 7 stars if I could. The sound quality is terrific considering that they are all home recordings.
Buy it! You will be glad that you did!! Enjoy!!

2 out of 5 stars Standards and their discontents.......2006-01-13

There are ways of expanding on standards that leave them intact, like Coltrane's "Favorite Things", etc.

Then there's the way Tatum plays a standard, which sounds as if he's trying to impress fellow musicians. Tatum can't go more than two bars before exploding into a diarrhea of arpeggios that might bring a smile to jaded listeners, but completely ruin the feel of the songs.

If you like James P. Johnson, you're likely to love this, but if you're looking for restraint and taste, look elsewhere.
