Who am I doing now?.......2007-02-21

Scat singing George Benson often performed other people's songs in other people's voices. His vocal on Leon Russell's "This Masquerade" for example is a Stevie Wonder impression. Although "Give Me The Night" isn't a cover, George is clearly doing his best Lionel Richie here. And is that a touch of Michael Jackson creeping into "20/20"?

Benson is at his best with instrumentals, particularly "Being With You," a song that showcases his abilities. Even when playing however, George is occasionally imitating. The "Breezin'" guitar sounds very much like Wes Montgomery, while "On Broadway" is reminiscent of the guitarwork from "Shaft."

Maybe this should be called THE GREATEST IMITATIONS OF ALL. (3½ stars)

I recently saw George Benson perform at the Newport Jazz Festival - it was a perfect day with great weather and scenery. I love this compilation to bits, but can someone tell me why "In Your Eyes" and "You're The Love Of My Life" are not included?

How in the world could there not be the full length version of "This Masquerade" on this CD???!!! I had to buy "Breezin" just to get it. Although, "Breezin" is very good as well. Also, where are "Nature Boy", "Gonna Love You More" & "Beyond the Sea"? Those would have been much better choices than cuts #12, 18 & 19. Otherwise, it really is a great CD. "Shiver" is one of my all time favorites and "I Just Wanna Hang Around You" has the prettiest harmonies. George is an extremely talented singer and guitar player, and I love to scat along with him in the car! I recommend you purchase this one.

This is an all time favorite disc of mine. Believe me because I have a huge C.D. collection and this is a "must have,must play" disc. G.B. has some awesome songs to his name and this disc captures the ESSENCE that is George Benson.
