Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars light up the incense and dig.......2007-01-28

while i am not a big fan of john mcLaughlin or mahvishnu orchestra - i cannot deny that they really had something with this album.. It is something new - not just an extension of miles davis - they were breaking new territory... There is a cohesiveness amongst the band members - of course abounding with improvisational talent - this is fushion but first of all it is music.

5 out of 5 stars DE COMO LA CRUDEZA SE VISTE DE VIRTUOSISMO.... .......2006-11-12

ELECTRIZANTE DEBUT DE ESTA MAGNIFICA BANDA, CON LOS PIES EN EL JAZZ MAS FURIBUNDO Y ECLECTICO....MAGNIFICAS CANCIONES (CANCIONES?) QUE EN ALREDEDOR DE 5 MINUTOS CADA UNA OFRECEN UN DESPLIEGUE INIGUALABLE DE POLENTA Y TALENTO...PUNTO CULMINE DE LA FUSION QUE ABREVA EN LAS EXPERIENCIAS PIONERAS DE MILES DAVIS

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Fusion album of all time!!.......2006-10-11

If you see four and a half to five stars when nearly 100 people wrote a review, then that's your answer. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars YES THE COMPOSITIONS ARE GOOD.......2006-09-06

J.R. I'm sorry but you don't know what you are talking about. Probably because you never saw this band live. This music is a lot easier to pick up on when seen live, but once you grasp it it's special.

I've seen most of the people you mention as being better composers. Sorry. NOPE! NO WAY! NADA! I've seen acts that were this good but never seen one that was better or more impressive in ANY way. And I've seen my share of composers. Zappa, Mingus, Miles, Sun Ra, Terry Riley, Steve Reich. This stuff stands up quite well to time.

The compositions may not be on the level of Beethoven or Miles Davis (wrong about him too) but they broke ground, and they continue to be a bar that few bands, or composers, reach. This band at it's heights was spectacular, no, unbelievable. The metric stuff alone cracked open the world of music. Of course it's partially improvised so it's a group compositional effort. It remains raw which is way better than 99% of the polished stuff that followed. It's harder to listen to than a lot of jazz rock but it's well worth the effort. Most fusion or jazz rock is actually pretty lame, not this.

In fact some of the "composers" you mention, I don't want to name names because these are all fine musicians, but some of them have put out some awful, lightweight elevator music in terms of composition.

Some of the later Mahavishnu albums are not that great and I will agree that McLaughlin tends towards virtuosity rather than composition, but you've got it wrong on this one and Birds of Fire. THESE two are definitely NOT elevator music and BOTH deserve more than 5 stars compared to some of the crap that gets 5 stars. I would call them inspired nearly devine.

However if you are a conservative listener... go for what J.R. recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Actually, 4.75 stars...very inspiring!.......2006-06-24

I've been known to be "long-winded" with some of my reviews, but I will keep this one short. In a few words, this album (along with a handful of others) turned my musical world upside down. I had NEVER heard anything quite like this before...raw, beautiful, delicate, brutal...these are just a few words to describe this album. I also began to approach playing the drums with some of the "concepts" I was hearing on IMF (please don't misunderstand what I'm saying here...NOBODY plays like Cobham, and I'm NO exception, however, I was able to "cop" some ideas from him and integrate it into my style---more than once did I recieve an unpleasant look from one of my fellow musicians when I threw in some "un-needed" 32cnd notes where they were probably not needed. Anyway, this is a super-charged release (along with Birds of Fire) that I would strongly recommend to anyone looking for passionate music...but be prepared for the Assault! Enjoy, Jeff
