Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Haden + Rubalcaba = Jazz Fidelity to Latin Roots.......2007-01-14

This is my favorite jazz record purchase of the last ten years. Once again Haden generously finds a more dominant instrument (piano) with which to match his own tasteful accompaniment and arrangments. The album truly retains the original Latin flavor of the seelctions yet is bona fide jazz. For me only the great jazz recordings of the "Concierto de Aranjuez" (Jim Hall; the MJQ; and Miles Davis) reach so faithfully and so successfully back to Spanish or Latin American traditional music or boleros but within the medium of jazz.

2 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!.......2005-07-07

Now this is a real disappointment, and I even bought it a full price. I saw it on the list of Down Beat's Album of the Year and bought it without thinking twice about it. A far cry from "Always Say Goodbye", which is in a similar laid-back style. And an even farer cry from his duo record with Kenny Barron, "Night and the City".

5 out of 5 stars Only a few words to explain........2005-04-13

Imagine: you're driving on the highway late at night. There is no traffic and nobody is waiting for you at home.
Imagine: Charlie Haden, bass Gonzalo Rubalcaba, piano.
This should do it.

5 out of 5 stars More lovely playing from Metheny/Haden.......2005-03-13

I Love this album. Great playing - great sound.

I took it to the local Audiophile HiFi store to test out a valve amp that I wanted to buy. It got the attention of everyone in the store - their jaws just dropped. It sounds amazing. I bought the amp. And the speakers !!

4 out of 5 stars Haden's Distillery part IV.......2005-01-04

If Weber's assertion that anything truly original benefits from reduction, then Charlie Haden's ongoing distillations of film-era jazz are continuing to improve not only the songs in question, but also the genre, which has suffered by addition too much of the time.

It's fair to ask: how so? By adding whomever to Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson, studios virtually ensured a playable, but mediocre result. Jazz has been brought along not by big names, but by groups who insist on its place firstly as a group phenomenon and only secondly as a vehicle for individual expression. Haden's experience proves this point. Back when jazz was the culture, this was understood.

So now on to the music - what makes this highly understated album worth owning? "Nightfall", "Noche de Ronda", "Contigo En La Distancia--En Nosotros". Listen in particular for how Haden works with the pianist. Jazz companionship is not always regarded as the highest and best outcome of a broad musical endeavor more associated with virtuosity of late, but it is one hell of an achievement, and these and other songs resonate with simple phrasing which references a common center. "El Ciego" is matter of another color entirely and the violin work is what you come to expect. I wish there was more of it on this CD.

I reserve the right to place 4 stars on this if only because perfection is reserved for the other-worldly, but this is a fine and, considering present circumstances, rare example of conversational jazz. Enjoy.
