Customer Reviews:
If you are having trouble relaxing..........2006-12-05
...then this is the album for you. Everytime I have a rough day at work I pop this one into my car stereo on my way home and all my troubles seem to vanish within seconds. It's the softer side of Coltrane but ooooh so sweet and tranquil. How anyone can listen to this album and not be touched by it I will never know. Tyner is amazing! If you run out of valium or xanax, then this could be your next choice. But be careful though, because it can be just as addictive!
Along with "Coltrane w/ Johnny Hartman", this is the most romantic recording JC ever produced as a leader and it is also my wife's personal favorite.
5 Stars, OF COURSE!!!.......2006-07-17
Wow. I haven't heard my favorite Coltrane disc until now. John Coltrane had won me over with his excellent harmonic and melodic explorations over the years, but this is a nice soft turn and beautiful music for any occasion. Plus this is the type of music you can have on during other activities or listen to intently alone--both types of listening experiences work equally well with this disc. The drums seem to sit back a bit but every instrument is equally serving the song.
Elvin does get his share of soloing in, however, and the entire band is playing like they have been together for years! McCoy Tyner continues his perfect harmonizing and comping, and the rhythm of the entire band is spot-on. Jimmy Garrison continues with ostinatos and rollicking bass lines underpinning the entire ensemble. It is incredible the balance of tones that is achieved by this band.
They meld into a single unit, Coltrane's most beautiful tone pushing the songs up into the stratosphere.
If you are normally a non-jazz listener, and want to hear the best of the best, without being overwhelmed by Coltrane's normally cerebral (and seemingly self-serving, at times) soloing over a non-moving harmonic ostinato, then buy this CD. I bought the Deluxe Edition. It is great, but the first CD is the cream of the crop, although the 2nd one is very fine, and great for listening at any time. The strong songs strengthen the greatness of these guys' playing, keeps them grounded and "in the pocket."
This is not the only essential Coltrane, in my opinion, but it IS essential to have a better understanding of Coltrane's range both as a player and as a soloist. This recording and "A Love Supreme" together would make for a huge part of what defined Coltrane as a great Jazz Artist. Any serious Coltrane fan already has this, probably. If you an occasional listener or want to know more about Coltrane's more excessible, and very beautiful ballad side, this is a perfect choice.
romantic and cool.......2006-03-20
I love the "smoky" piano bar sound of this album. I picture my best girl having a couple of pops late at night
Sets the mood.......2006-03-13
Great CD. Perfect for a late evening with a glass of wine.
Great Song List.......2006-02-09
John Coltrane - with the best support team ever in Jazz! These songs are very haunting and Karryn Allyson did a good job of bring the lyrics to life on her tribute album. I listen to this recording over and over again and find inspiration and something new each time. What's New is a classic rendition and Too Young To Go Steady is treated very well indeed. You won't be sorry.
