3 out of 5 stars 2.5 stars: Pretty good start but lacks emotion..............................2007-01-14

I'm starting to sound like Simon. LOL. I guess the emotion will come once he gets some life experiences under his belt. Other than that its a enjoyable cd. Check it out!

PS: Not a good move putting a rat pack spin on Maroon 5's This Love. Yuck!

4 out of 5 stars A great escape.......2007-01-10

I caught on to John Stevens while watching him on American Idol. Even though I thought he was out of place in that competition, I figured he had a future with that genre of music. I was pleased to find his album when I did a search on Amazon. I like the album but wish he would adopt more of a Dean Martin or Perry Como style instead of the Frank Sinatra style he favors. Still, I rate this as a good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars What a fantastic CD.......2006-10-09

My husband and I watched John Stevens perform on American Idol and have been anticipating the release of Steven's first CD. Unfortunately, his publicity machine didn't reach Texas because we just heard about it by accident last week. We've listened to the whole CD and think it's just fantastic! Every song is great. I took it to work and played it and now everyone there is a John Steven's fan. From webmasters to mechanics, this kid appeals to everyone. I especially like the Beatles cover of Here There and Everywhere. My co-workers think All of Me is his best. Anyone who buys this CD will think it's worth every penny.

3 out of 5 stars Nice kid and he is learning, but it is too soon for Red to record Sinatra.......2006-06-14

I read an interesting debate regarding Season 5 of "American Idol" in which some people in the music industry were hoping that Paris Bennett would be voted out of the competition as soon as possible. There argument was that she was the most talented contestant but that if she won she would be forced to make an album before she was ready. There concern with the young teenager was that she would be pushed too far, too fast, and that this would be a bad thing. That same argument can be made with the other teenage finalists on "American Idol," and certainly it can be applied to John Stevens from Season 3 of "American Idol" and his 2005 album, "Red."

Stevens stood out in Season 3 not only because he had red hair, but also because he insisted on singing the big band, swing, and jazz songs that he discovered in his grandparents' record collection. This was enough to finish sixth in the competition and in June of 2005, right after he graduated from high school, "Red" was released (with a black & white cover shot, so that only the title appears in red--go figure). Although I think they pushed him too fast, you certainly cannot say producer Steve Tyrell pushed his young singer too far. The eleven tracks on this album are almost all covers of American standards. You have songs by Sammy Cahn ("Come Fly With Me" and "It Had to Be You"), George Gershwin ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), Hoagy Carmichael ("This Love"), Harold Arlen ("Let's Fall in Love"), Duke Ellington ("Don't Get Around Much Anymore"), and, as a sop to the younger old people who like this kind of music, Lennon & McCartney ("Here, There and Everywhere"). Even when you do not readily recognize the names of the composers, the songs are still the familiar tunes "My Blue Heaven," "All of Me," "I Only Have Eyes for You," and "The Shadow of Your Smile." The main strength of this album it that it will introduce some great songs to kids who have never heard them before, which would be a good thing.

Of course, the common denominator for most of these songs is that Frank Sinatra sang them first. At least, I know Sinatra sang nine of them for sure, and actually I am shocked he apparently never recorded "Here, There and Everywhere," because it would suit his vocal stylings perfectly. We knew going in that Stevens was not in Sinatra's class, so the hope would be that he would do more than to imitate the master and even though they took another year to produce this first album, Stevens does not show much growth beyond what we saw on television. There is a little more vocal assurance and he now has the proper type of musicians backing him, but his phrasing lacks originality. He sounds like Sinatra (or at least like Harry Connick), but, of course, he is not Sinatra (or Connick). An album needs to have more to recommend it than it fulfills the dream of at least one grandmother than her grandson would sing Frank Sinatra songs. I like the songs and I like the idea of a young kid trying to sing them, but "Red" is simply okay. Hopefully five or ten years down the road Stevens will be able to return to these songs and do them right, at which point his debut album can be forgotten.

Young guy with a old voice, and a imitated style of Frank & Dean and a little Tony Bennett thrown in the mix, but i liked it. One of the better finalist of the show.
