Customer Reviews:
Not sure I like it!.......2007-03-08
I read the reviews before buying this and now see why some people were so harsh in thier reviews. Sounds better after a few glasses of wine. Too different for my taste. If you are a jazz purist this may not be to your liking. Davis tries something different and I am not sure it worked.
jazz classic........2007-02-11
okay, all you yayhoos out there; want some great late night listening? something to relax and edify? well, put away all your new age cds, shuck old yanni in the trash bin, and pick up miles davis's bitches brew. no law says laid-back music can't be powerful and soulful. so here it is: just such music. miles trumpet displays a calm, beautiful and mysterious tone throughout this masterpiece. unconventional jazz to be sure, but accessible to anyone's ears. the great john mclaughlin adds fantastic touches of guitar to the recording, and other master musicians on board are: wayne shorter, chick corea, dave holland, and jack dejohnette. after you get this album and find out how much you love it (which you certainly will if there is a modicum of sanity about you), be sure to pick up "in a silent way," too. another classic miles album with a very similar vibe to bitches brew. happy listening.
Jazz Meets Rock.......2007-01-17
Miles Davis had a long and fantastic career, in the late 40's he was part of the "Cool" Jazz movement and in the late 50's it was "Modal jazz" which ended with the amazing "Kind of Blue", the most sold and popular Jazz album of all time. But 10 years later, times were changing and Miles didn't want to be stuck in the past so his greatest quality as a musician would be revealed again, His Versability. Miles was always at the right place at the right time and played with some of the greatest contemporary musicians aswell. Around this time he was getting interested in new tecnique, basically electronics but also exotic instruments that hadn't been used in Jazz musch before. Instead of continue with what worked before he decided to try something completely diffrent and also change his whole appearence. No more Italian classy suits and gentleman appearence like most Jazz players had. Instead, find someting exotic to wear, add sunglasses and a new hairstyle and Voilá you look more like a superstar. The term "Fusion" is quite misleading since the genre itself can be very diffrent from artist to artist, even song to song. But it's basically a hybrid of diffrent genres. Jazz, Rock, Funk, Electronics and World Music. There are no specific rules in the genre but it isn't like old jazz since it's more rhythmic and modern with the use of "Rock" instruments and a whole lot of diffrent musicians would appear in the sessions, most of those would later become top Fusion musicians on their own like Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Airto Moreira (Weather Report) John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and Chick Corea.
Miles Davis had already started to experience with this new sound of his previous album "In A Silent Way" but that album only had 2 songs and this one would become the defnite "Fusion" album, it's both revolutional and controvercial in many ways. A giant step of the the evolution of Jazz ofcourse, finally the genre took advantage of modern tecnique and mixed other genres into it to create a more exprimental andartistic sound. It would also attract many new audiences and Miles Davis was invited to play at the Isle of Wight Rock Festival! Never before had a Jazz Musician got this much praise and recognition, but at the same time it wasn't longer classic Jazz he was doing, "Fusion" is even closer to rock then it is to Jazz and many Jazz purists would critisize Miles for destroying Jazz. It is still alot of debate going on wether this is a good album or not, Some love it and some learned to love it while others never liked it. It was also controvercial for the album title "Bitches Brew" but based on the music we must agree that it makes sense. The music can be hard to get into if you're not fammiliar what it is. Most songs are really long, the first two 20 and 27 minutes and the third 17. "Pharaos Dance" is a groovy modal piece a bit slower then some of the others with haunting instrumentation that sets the mood for the rest of the album. You can hear Chick Corea's Fender Rhodes piano here. The title track is much faster, distorted and funky. Perhaps this is the finest example of Fusion. Check McLaughlin's guitar here. Next song is more latin inspired and makes good proof that world music is part of Fusion aswell. Check some of the exotic instruments here. The other songs are called "John Mclaughlin", only 4 minutes long and pick up where the previous ended. "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down", "Sanctaury" that is a new version of an old Miles song, but sound completely diffrent and then if you have the remastered version there is a song called "Feio" also. Those three songs are all over 10 minutes each, and overall this has to be among the longest Jazz albums ever recorded.
Bottom line, A milestone in Miles Davis career and also in Jazz. It may be difficult to realize what a huge impact this album had when it came out in 1969 and how exprimental and unique it was. Miles Davis and producer Teo Macero broke all the rules and with the help of this magnificent band they created a blueprint for a new genre. In restrospect you can ofcourse say that alot of latter Fusion wasn't that good, but to have the guts and creativity to make such an album is amzing. Wether you'll love this or not it's atleast essential listening and undeniably a revolutionary album, not only for Miles but for Jazz to come.
TRYPNOTIC!.......2006-12-31
When I first heard this music, it was at a time in my life when I was searching for life's meaning and the music struck a certain resonance with my core being. I don't care about what Miles did before, after or during this time period, who his inspirations were or what effect this album had on future music progressions...I love this music for the music itself...it blows my mind in a way that no other music out there has ever been able to accomplish. The reviewer who said this music was not drug inspired must themselves be out of their minds...it was produced at the height of the psychedelic revolution (Hello!?!). Although I love everything about all of the tracks, my two favorite pieces are John McLaughlin and Miles Runs the Voodoo Down. This stuff is completely original and hits you on so many levels...the musical contributions of the other members of the band are obscure yet intertwined through Miles haunting trumpet...the sounds create something transient and beautiful. The only other Miles album I've heard that comes close to moving me the way this album did was an obscure later double album release called "Get Up With It". So dim the lights, light some candles, pour yourself your favorite drink (or smoke), put this CD on and set yourself adrift...
Speechless.......2006-10-30
Every time I put this cd on, I'm carried away. It's a perfect example of improvisational jazz by one of the masters. I don't know what else to say, except if you like jazz or Miles Davis, this one is *not* to be missed.
