5 out of 5 stars essential.......2007-03-28

ok so im still new to jazz. relatively.
i called the local public radio station and asked the dj to play me a specific track. he didnt have it. i mentioned that there are some young guys i work with that i am trying to just get to listen. he said that this is the record he recommends to people that are just getting to know jazz and lo n behold i happen to have it.. i dusted it off on the old hard drive... man was he right.... i put a copy in my car and have been listening to it for days straight like my mind is trying to memorize every note... its not as dark as miles, which i really dig, but sometimes i just need to listen to something that just drags me out of the doldrums and this is it.....

5 out of 5 stars great music. period........2007-01-15

who am i to say which is the best art blakey album. i'm just a silly mediocre person; but i will say this: this is great music. at the moment I will dare to say it is MY favorite blakey album. anyone who enjoys jazz should have this. and even if you have yet to get into jazz, pick up a copy of this anyway. great music is great music, regardless of genre.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Art.......2006-12-08

If you like your jazz beefy with clean sophisticated phrasing. Smoothe & sparkling. Refined, designed, classy. This disc is it! My only reason for 4 rather than 5 stars would be my preference for jazz that's a little more experimental. That said this disc is first rate!

5 out of 5 stars cool man cool.......2006-11-02

I was very impressed by mr Blakeys music and the much talked about skill of the messengers cool man very cool and a very welcome change from my usual diet of elllington and davis it brings a new flavor to the genera loland anyways if you enjoy jazz then this one is not to be missed

5 out of 5 stars Cornerstone of jazz you must own.......2006-07-21

I have to agree with Nero. There isn't a bad track on Moanin'...I actually think it gets better with each tune. If you don't have this in your collection or want to introduce someone to top-notch jazz, buy this CD.
