Customer Reviews:
All right here!!.......2006-03-22
With all the trouble in the world today, listening to this guy you just know everything will be all right.
even better than you'd expect........2006-02-10
"Free" is Alex Bugnon's 9th studio album, and arguably one of the best. Over the years, his style has steadily evolved to a more natural piano sound, most notably on his previous release, "Southern Living." While other artists subscribe to the law of diminishing returns with each album released, Alex is the polar opposite, getting better and better with time.
Needless to say, if you liked "Southern Living" you will love "Free." Personally, I didn't think the songs were as catchy, but that's not to say that they weren't good. In fact, they're excellent, if a bit less distinctive.
For soul-influenced contemporary jazz with the perfect touch of improvisation, you can't beat Alex's output, especially on "Free." Songs like "Sierra Leone" with its low-bass pulse and Alex's lilting melodies and the moody, minor-chord-heavy "Downtime" are perfect examples of this. So are "Fingertips" and "Carrera" which are lighter, but still rich and funky.
After swearing off pop covers several years ago, Alex is slowly bringing them back into the mix with tracks like "Tomorrow" a somewhat obscure Brothers Johnson tune from the late 1970s given a new jazzy sheen with a stylish new beat (similar to "Sweetwater Creek" from "Southern Living") and attentive piano solos.
If you're an Alex Bugnon fan, you need this album. Buy it without hesitation. If you're just getting to know his work, you can start here and be enlightened. If you don't "get" smooth jazz, at least give it a listen. You might be impressed.
Also, if you dig this sort of music, you owe it to yourself to see Alex in concert. I saw him last year in Greensboro, North Carolina, and it was easily one of the best smooth jazz concerts I've ever been to.
Just What I Expected............2005-12-27
I've been a fan of Alex since the mid 90's. I'm in love with his music. All 10 tracks on this CD moves me. I can't find one track that I don't like or that can be "blah" or disappointing. Alex Bugnon has to be my all-time favorite (even though Euge Groove is tied with him), and this CD justifies why.
This CD delievers some well written music. My favs on here are Carrera, Pillow Talk, and Out There. There's a smooth, sexiness about his music that I think is quite cleat in Pillow Talk.
Great CD all the way around.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeexcellent!!!!!!.......2005-10-27
I have followed this luscious French pianist since his debut in the early 90s. It is obvious that Alex was heavily influenced by African-American music and he has always accorded it the highest respect by beautiful readings of R&B standards.
On this last outing, quite frankly, this is probably his best to date. It is a smooth, concise, and exceedingly enjoyable listening experience. Even the A&R department took a little time to make sure the transition between cuts is smooth and makes sense.
There are absolutely NO duds/fillers on this project. Alex has submitted an earthy, soulful project showcasing again his keyboard mastery. There are no gimmicky experiments - this is simply quality music - for grown folks.
If you are a follower of Alex Bugnon, this is nothing more than a promise fulfilled. If you are new to his music, you should thoroughly appreciate his musicianship.
And on top of everything else, he looks just YUMMY!
A Strong Contender for a Grammy!.......2005-10-19
If you're an Alex Bugnon fan you will love this CD. If you are a fan of smooth jazz you must have this CD. This CD is a part 2 of Southern Living. It's stronger more focused and full of what I call "Monster" musicians, freaks of nature. Vincent Henry, I don't know why he does not have 7 or 8 CD's out by now. He plays flute, sax and harmonica on this CD's. Darrell Freeman on Bass, everybody will know his name soon. Victor Bailey on Bass, everybody knows his name. Lil'John on Drums, the list goes on and on. This CD is fresh, funky, hip, sophicated, open. The grooves are SO DEEP, it's make me wonder why the CD doesn't skip.
I'm hooked on "Sierra Leone". Period. I'm learning to play that song. My band is going to use that song to open our set. "In Your Eyes" and "Out There" will play in your head for hours.
Congratulation Alex, you've done it again. Hope to see you soon. One of your friends from Dayton...
