Eclectic Blend of Old & New: ASTONISHING! GREAT!.......2003-09-16
The first track, sounds very much like a typical East Euro song, fast paced instrumentals & music, great female vocals, over-all a sophisticated, cultured "city sound". There is an oboe and saxaphone for sure, the other instruments can not be identified by me. Many of the other tracks, definitely originate from traditional folk music, in fact, to my utmost amazement, one of the tracks is *known* to me ... which came first the music on *this* CD, or the one by the Hungarian folk group, Sebo & Ensemble who use the same melody for the Attila Jozsef poem, called "Harmatocska", perhaps I will never discover. But *here* it is, on this CD! (I have a tape of it). I am stunned ... it sound as great played & sung by Brathanki as it does by the Hungrians!!! There is a very delightful, unexpected ending: a young girl provides the voice & joyful exuberance of youth to a song which completes the CD. Creative genius!
What I truly appreciate on this CD is how the group will improvise and embelish certain rhythms and melodies ... addding New Orleans jazz stylizations, some klezmer type variations and also at times ... leave the melody to flow on its natural course.
I am especially happy to hear the song, "Ballada o mitosci, Staszku jego bracie Marianie". Again, have no idea what is sung, but it has the soft Brazlian jazz singing style & great musical phrases. Plus, the words, "do dalekiego Chicago", the last one which I recognize ... This is an enormously talented group who no doubt are are high on the charts in Poland. They are creative and innovative. There is one traditonal musical phrase, which is often repeated but which undergoes lots of change,improvisation, and experimenation ... exploring different musical variations and paths. The melody is *always* recognizable ... true talent!
Highly recommended CD for fans of modern, updated tradtional music, played on a blend of traditional and modern instruments.
