Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars One of his 70's pearls.......2006-05-26

Need some break from English/American rock every once in a while? Well, there are great French (Ange, Desir Noir, Magma), Italian (PFM, YS), Hungarian (Omega) alternatives - just to mention the "progressive rock" genre where the mere sound of an unfamiliar language adds to the enchantment.

Nevertheless, what if you're not a native English speaker but still enjoy intelligent and fun lyrics every once in a while? There is good news for you, provided you are of a German tongue! Buy Votan Wahnwitz from Udo Lindenberg. This is one of the 70's highlights (others being Panische Naechte, and Ball Pompoes) in his huge catalogue (42 regular albums). In general I like almost all of Lindenberg's fast going tracks. They suit his voice better and the band is fabulous. The slower ballads sometimes fail, though one can get accustomed to UL's suboptimal voice characteristics to some extent. For instance, it took me some time to get the hang of "Da war so viel los", but the story about his school buddies and their (failed) dreams, ending with one guy winding up as a garbage disposal clerk (Muellabfuhr), and fizzling out with one minute of real sad guitar blues, reconciled me with his peculiar ("gewoehnungsbeduerftig") voice. Real good actually is the ballad of "Jack". It's the macabre story of his friend (truly?) that is run over by a truck, his thoughts in the last second of his life, and the heavenly encounter with Hendrix, Buddy Holly, Marilyn. It's my six year old sons favorite now, relegating Ricki Masorati from Panische Naechte to second place. Asked about Marylin, I told him "das war die schoenste Frau der Welt. Die wurde vergiftet im selben Jahr als Mama geboren wurde"; he doesn't like her hairstyle though.

Whether you like Lindenberg or not, you have to give him credit for being the sole conveyor of an element of Zappa into the German music scene, foremost in the decade 1975-1985. He turns 60 this year - happy birthday.
