Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning..........2001-01-25

I love World music and consider myself a bit of a purist. This album is for everyone who wants to start listing to World music, with special attention to vocals. It's not 'pop' like many of the big record companies new releases ( celtic & cuban ) but diverse and moving. The songs are mostly traditional old songs and they can easy work as the soundtrack to your imaginary trip around the World.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing voices!.......2000-04-03

This CD is dedicated to the beauty of the human voice and you accurately get a well rounded selection of them. Every single track you listen to is nearly flawless--there aren't that many choral groups that achieve this kind of perfection. The actual songs are primarily European with a touch of Japanese, Tibetan and Middle Eastern. ALL the songs are ancient choral pieces from as early as first century B.C. to as recent as 17th century. The haunting beauty of these ancient pieces is apparent.

I was very pleased to see that one inventive piece was also included on this CD--a combination of Tibet Buddhist monks and the sweet sounds of Bulgarian women's chorus. This is track #9, "Legend." The polyphonic techniques of the monks, still a mystery for most of us, is incredible to hear and experience. Very foreign to Western ears, many people tend to either like it or not with little middle ground. In combination with the Bulgarian women you have a song of comparisons and contrasts--strange and yet hauntingly beautiful. Also listen to track #1, "Ts'ints'qaro." Oddly enough, track #13, "The Appeal of Cosmic Cathedrals," is like a summary of the entire CD. You hear influences of all of it in this last piece. If you like these three tracks, you'll love this CD.

This CD is great for stress relief too!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Collection of World Music.......1999-09-08

A must for any world music collection

5 out of 5 stars Expands one's sense of voice beyond the ordinary.......1998-10-10

A compendium of a wide variety of musical styles that focus on the human voice. Evocative and provocative. Reminiscent of the first playings of Paul Simon's "Saints" album, when that kind of music was not familiar to the listener.
